R1? Dual Oil Cooler Location

I am looking at an 93 Montego Blue FD and it has some indications that it is an R1 and some that it is not.

For:
No Sunroof
Dual Oil Coolers (i think, the dealer told me thats what the 'mini radiator' looking things are under the parking lights. I have looked for pics, but to no avail) I thought dual oil coolers were the tell all sign of an R1. I have been assured this car has not been modified by the dealer and the mechanic who works on it.
Lip Spoiler

Against:
No Spoiler
Tan Leather Interior.
I have heard definitive statements that 'if you have a tan interior, you dont have an R1'. Is this true?

Whatcha think? If all goes well, I could pick it up saturday

Everything you say it true, hard to say what the car truly is. Does it have cruise control or a front strut tower bar?

All that said the only really worthwile mod in my opinion is the second oil cooler (which are the little radiator things under the parking lights) that the car you're looking at does have. Other than that the R1 had the R1 specific suede seats, front strut tower bar and stiffer struts. Performance wise all the models are the same.

it does have cruise control. and they are definately leather seats... i guess the original owner could have opted for leather instead?

It's very easy to see the oil coolers. Just look in at the two holes on the front bumper. They look like very small IC's. It is easy however to install oil coolers, but if you really trust them that the car is bone stock then only the R1 has two oilcoolers.

If it has leather seats it is not an R1. You should think about if they are really telling the truth cause to me it doesnt sound like it's an R1

What about the front strut tower bar? If not I bet you are just like me; it's a base model with the second cooler added.

It is NOT an R1. It is Montego Blue w/tan interior. Neither of those came with R1s. Leather was not optional. Not many options to pick and choose from, especially in '93. Base, R1 or Touring. Leather was an option, auto trans was an option, otherwise nothing else really was. It all comes in "packages" like many Japanese cars.

Is your car an automatic? If so one of those coolers is a trans cooler.

Otherwise like people have stated the dual coolers could have been added.

the dealer will be able to run the vin and tell you if it is an r1 or not. it sounds like a base with leather

There is no way to tell from the VIN alone what option package is/was on the car. MAZDA Corporate may have that info archived someplace but I doubt the DEALERS have ready access to it.

You can take your VIN to the dealer and get a "warranty claim" report. This will take the parts or service guy all of 2 min to run. It'll give a complete warranty claim report history, along with recalls performed.

I ran one on my R1 and found it does not list an R1 as a R1, just the body color and the color of the interior. I also ran one on my 94 PEP, it listed it as a PEP under the description of the car.

On the warranty claim reports the vehicle description is entered by the dealer when making a claim - it is not generated by the VIN - thats why the PEP showed up and the R-1 did not. I also ran one for mine and the description was just RX-7 no mention of options / colors or the fact mine is an AUTO.

I might have the terminology wrong but it is most definetly generated using the VIN.

It lists interior and exterior color, trans type, Key Code, even the original owner's name AND phone # came up on one.

It shows every part replaced under warranty with a part #, description and vehicle mileage.

Cool

R1= No sun roof(except for 95 and then it would be an R2), No Tan leather interior, No Montego Blue color, No rear wiper, No cruise control, No Bose sound system.
Yes front strut tower bar, Yes stiffer suspension, Yes dual oil coolers, Yes rear and front spoilers, Yes Vintage Red, Yellow Mica and Black, Yes black swede interiors.
Anything else is a "fake wana be R1" and your dealer is full of it and don't know jack about RX7.
