Quick warning to all who get their intake manifolds coated

All,

If you get your intake mainfolds coated and your coater uses some kind of bead blasting to clean it, make sure you try and blow compressed air through all of the nipples before you install it on your engine. I found three glass beads in various parts of my manifold after I got it back and I could only get them out by blowing compressed air through the manifold. At the worst, I'm pretty sure if one of those had gotten sucked into my engine I would have been in serious trouble. Even at the best, those beads were blocking air flow through the nipples they were stuck in and were bound to cause all sorts of various issues with anything attached to those nipples.

So, just a word of warning. Check your manifold after you get it back from the coaters .

Thanks for the heads up Andy. With all of the coated mani's I've sold, I've always sent out a PM/email with a similar warning, but in your case I neglected to do so, sorry about that.

I remember years ago a guy I knew had his engine rebuilt at our shop, then had his mani's coated somewhere else. He put the motor in the car and it immediately failed . Those little beads wreck havoc on apex seals.

It has always been GOOD standard practice to clean any parts coming from a machine shop no matter how clean they look.

After side housings are lapped, wash them and use small brass spiral brushes to clean out the oil passages. I fine that the brass brushes used to clean out 22 and 38 caliber guns work great.

Isn't that so, Rich?

lol, you and my father would get along great Chuck. He makes his own bullets in the basement, and has all sorts of gun cleaning supplies down there

While we're talking about bullets and guns, Rich, do you have a M4 laying around the house? That is my favorite rifle at the moment =o)

I had one of those assigned to me when I was in Iraq. One of the things I liked most about it: b/c of the collapsible stock, you could fire with your pro mask (gas mask) on more easily. It wasn't very intimidating though, esp when compared to an AK-47

Yes, if you had a M4 and I had a AK, and we were 20 feet apart, I'd splatter your guts everywhere Rich, but anything over that, my AK would be useless against your super accurate kick *** M4. Plus, the M4 looks so awesome. HAHA Yes we are off topic.

If you are going to rock the m4 you should throw the m203 on there. At least it will look mean.

Hell, I'm a Captain. They usually give us rinky dink M9s, I was lucky enough to get the M4. A grenade launcher would have been pushing my luck

Heh, give me an M107 w/Swarovski sight and I'd cut an AK-toting target in half without him ever seeing me or hearing the sig...

OK, back on topic: Any part that has had metalwork done should be thoroughly cleaned, regardless of how insignificant it may seem. That is literally rule no. 1 before any engine assembly.
