Quick ? RE: Greddy SMIC

1) Can the stock air box be used with it?

2) Stock piping from the elbow and cross over pipe meet with it? Or do I need to purchase the Greddy pipe kit?

1) Yes

2) It comes with a 90* pipe to mate the I/C to the crossover, but the other side is a different story. Your best bet would be to buy a 45* coupler so you can cut it if it needs any adjustment. When I had mine, I had to cut the pipe that had worked fine on my stocker, but I've seen others where they fit just fine with no modification.

Does the stock air box need to be modified for the Greddy smic to fit?

I would say NO. It won't fit with stock airbox.

I traded Greddy SMIC for Blitz to install stock airbox. Even with Blitz there is issues fitting it in.

Anyone have photos of the IC mating with the elbow that leads to the throttle body?

The Greddy will fit with the stock airbox, but it is a very tight installation. You may need to do some modifications to some of the mounts to get it in there. My Blitz SMIC fit with virtually no modification.

It will fit with the stock airbox, that's what it was designed for, it's a tight fit but definitely fits and you can also keep a stock battery in there.

I've just spent the past week installing mine, using the instructions that come with the SMIC.

I also took the opportunity to carry out the Cheap intake mod and have also modified the stock ducting that feeds the airbox and IC and retained it's functionality.

I'll post up some pics tomorrow, It's now 1 am here otherwise would have got some pics right now.

Sweet I'm trying to keep the car as stock as possible.

I'm now worried about mating of the top IC pipe to the stock pipes.

You reckon I could grab a copy of the instructions? I bought a used ones so it didnt come with any.

Did you have to buy the Greddy piping kit or still using the stock piping to the IC?

The IC should come with 2 metal pipes, 1 90 deg bend and 1 45 deg bend plus 4 silicone couplers. Mating it all up should't be an issue with the stock piping, the difficulty is simply in getting it all in there due to space and maneouverability (is that the correct spelling).

Feel free to ask further questions, as it's still fresh in my mind I should hopefully be able to answer any queries you have.

I also bought mine used but it came with the 2 metal pipes as standard, I got the instructions off here.

Go to post #7 in the following thread which will open the instructions in PDF format

Ok all makes sense now. I thought it didnt come with the 90 degree bend or the 45 degree one but checking the photos its already there with a coupler holding it.

Ducting wise are you using the stock one with just some weather strips along the edges?

You'll have to buy a Pettit duct. It goes right in, very easy to install while the I/C is out.

That's right, you have to cut off the mouinting tab thats on the right, i.e. the one next to the intercooler.

I didn't use the ducting panel that comes with the ic, I used some aluminium sheet to make my own.

I'll post up some pics later showing the ducting, I created a panel that goes at the bottom of the ic, 2 panels at the sides and one at the top specially designed to integrate with the stock Mazda air feed.

My ic is now 100% sealed but as I've only just boght this car and not really used it as stock I can't say if it has affected performance or intake temps although it's safe to say it will definitely be an improvement on the stock ic.

I'll try and get you some pics also of the crdbord templetes I made in order to design the ducting, it's not pretty but it will provide you with a starting point if you want a 'proper' install and actually benefit from the biger ic.

The best way to tackle this job is to not try and do it quickly, but take your time doing a couple of hours a day. I spent a week doing mine and am very pleased with the fit and finish and it still lokks almost stock.

Sorry for the long post.

As promised, here's some pics I took during my SMIC install.

The panel I created for the bottom of the IC has a step in it which is to provide extra clearance for the radiator fans and conveniently is the same height as the end tank of the IC.

Using the pictures you should be able to calculate the diminsions of the panel I made.

You will also notice that I cut part of the stock air feed, I prposely cut off more than I needed to in order to create a smoother path for the entering air otherwise the upper part of the IC might not have had air hitting it directly.

I don't have any pics of the top panel as I was too keen to get the job finished but I spent quite a while creating aperfectly sealed funnel that connects between the lower air feed and the upper panel that covers it all up.
