It looks like all of you guys are buying the QL-25 model instead of the QL-38. The QL-25 comes in three diameters (1" / 1.25" / 1.5"). Which diameter are you guys buying?

I think I saw your post on facebook the other day but forgot to answer. I believe I got the smallest diameter, having two of these and keeping the stock hood latch is probably way more latching than is necessary!

Don't forget though, you will need to ask quik latch to send this with their longer version of the hood pins. Otherwise, the regular QL-25 pins that ship with it will not reach from the bump stop behind the headlight.

Thanks man! I opted for the 1.5 latches and made sure to order the longer pins.

^ What's the reason of using these on a stock hood?

Always had problems with the hood lifting slightly at the track. The body shop tried to adjust the latch but I was never satisfied. It wasn't horrible, but the edge of the hood is right in my line of sight and constantly annoyed me when it wasn't flush. I hope this fixes that.

Ahh got it, I have a set ready to go with the RE AD9 CF hood. I’m planning to order a set of M8 studs and use them at the reservoir mounting hole so I can retain the bump stop.

I know what you mean, my stock hood was always flapping in the wind. was pretty unnerving.

One thing with the stock hood is the aluminum is very thin. So I added these washers (listed as bushings at ACE) for a little back support:

Great thread. I'm kinda surprised no one has used the locking Quik Latches (at least that I've ever seen)

So when you drill the 7/8" hole in the hood, do you drill from the bottom or the top?
I drilled the pilot hole from the bottom and the larger hole through which I can screw in the big nut but not sure about the final hole that the latch is going to fit through.
Thanks.

Tape the top of the hood, drill the pilot hole from below and then drill down from the top. That way and burrs in the hood material are on the bottom and you have a clean hole at the top.

Here are a couple pics of what I did. I flipped the bolts for the bottle necks over, put a flat washer on, threaded a rod coupling on, then trimmed the pin ball tipped rods down and tightened them with a jam nut.

Pretty clever
I was trying to figure out a quick easy way to do that yesterday but gave up and used the hole alongside where that bolt is.

55mm pins, the 2 pack was around $20 shipped with Prime. With longer pins you could just thread it in through the top and use the jam nut, if I mount another hood I'll use the longer pins for ease.

The short pins proved a bit more difficult because it necessitated the use of the rod couplings and reading the short pins all the way in caused the hood to sit high so I had to cut them down. I forgot all of that earlier but your questions have jogged my memory!

I have these on my Wife's Supra. I have AeroCatch on my Supra. I'll be using these on the FD. That should stop my hood from fluttering !!!

Same here. This is a must do with any cf hood. Ace matching diameter washers.

Ql-38. Painted to match the hood. With ace washers. Perfect weighting. No movement.

A word or warning... Do not use a 7/8" hole saw to drill the hole through the top of the hood. Even though the threaded portion of the smallest Quik Latch is 7/8", the hole saw wound up cutting a hole closer to 1 1/4"... FML...
I need to go measure the hole and hopefully find a Quik Latch that fits or switch to a different latching mechanism.

There is a larger version, you may be able to get a flat washer to work or have a machine shop mill you a piece before all hope is lost.

That stinks!

When drilling something like this I would start with a small pilot drill bit and work up in size. May also be worth drilling a piece of wood or something sacrificial to test fit in.

Yeah, I did start with a small pilot hole drilled from below to determine the location. I don't have a big enough to bit to drill a 7/8" hole and someone had mentioned a 7/8" hole saw earlier in the thread so that is the approach I took. Sigh...
Posting so no one else makes the same mistake...

Oh no! I used a hole bit (need to double check the size) that worked well. To save the situation, what about finding the ACE bushings I showed earlier in this thread and sandwich them on both sides of the hood? If you paint them black to match the latches (or your hood color), it may not be noticeable. They are pretty thin. Just a thought.

Just to show what bits I used when drilling my hood. A 3/4 inch for the top and 1 1/8 for the bottom. The teeth stick out slightly, so the resulting hole will be somewhat larger that the listed diameter. The stock hood has sandwiched panels so the bottom hole has to be bigger for the nut to clear.
