Questions on rebuild (PICS)

Hi guys,

I'm in the process of doing my first rebuild and would like some advice on a few things please.

Firstly when I removed all my side seals and corner seals I didn't take note of where each one went where, is it a big problem if they don't go in the same position as they were?

I've got a pic of the wear the spring has caused on the corner seal, Are they still usable like this?

Can you tell me if these rotor housings are still usable? This one looks like it is in a good condition besides from a few gouging marks by the exhaust port. I've been told that its not serious here as there's no compression there.

And this one has no gouging but look as if something was pushed into it but is hardly that deep.

On the corner seals, there's a minimum height they should spring up above the rotor in the shop manual. If the groove is too deep, the spring won't push it up enough. Generally you'd have to have a chasm for a groove to cause problems, collapsed springs are moreso a problem.

What I would look at though is the wear pattern on the side of the corner seal where the side seal touches it. That artificially increases the gap there, and you want a good tight clearance. I run about .003" on the side seal to corner seal gap.

That said, I'd get new corner seals. The side wear is what concerns me.

The first rotor housing picture looks OK, might be worth sending off to have the rotor housing resurfaced. That spot by the trailing plug hole is more worrisome, but if it's not too deep that could come out in resurfacing as well.

Those corner seals are done. How many miles on that motor? You really shouldn't re-use any seals in a rebuild. You will never get as good compression or longevity as a proper build. I can't recommend it. Hard to tell from the pics but looks like both those rotor housings should resurface.

Mileage on the motor is unknown, I bought it from a second hand engine distributor..

I've just got RA super seals and new corner seals with all new springs, There's no such thing as resurfacing housings here in SA according to all the engine builders so I have to either reuse these housings or buy new ones which are pricey...

I can post different pics if that would help?

I clean up housings like that with a 3 inch 60 or 80 grit flap wheel on a drill ,it will get rid of most high spots and glazing and allow new apex seals to bed in easier and faster

Wow and is that not to rough on the chrome? will it not cause the surface to be uneven or not level?

Not if you do it lightly and move back and forward fairly quickly never stay in 1 spot for too long
