Question for those of you that have rebuilt a Fd Trany.
My transmission main bearing is making a lot of noise and I’m wondering if it was possible to replace the main bearing by pulling just the bellhousing? I’ve been studying the shop manual and it looks feasible. There is one thing I don’t understand, the manual has a special tool used to hold the 4th gear syncro. Is this necessary? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

No special factory tools are needed that you can not make . The complete rebuild can be done with out heating any parts or beating the life out of a part .My mechanic has rebuilt them, and put in 5th gear syncro on some( with out complete disassembly ) . I do not know about the mainbearing replacement .The input shaft bearing is replaceable on some cars after removing a cover at the bell housing.

There is a shop that Pettit sends their trans to where the guy is very knowledgeable. Had some issues with my rebuild and he was very helpful. You could try calling them

How do you know its that bearing? There are a handfull of bearings the the trans. There are 2 bearings in the back of the trans and if its one of them you'd have to pull the trans and get to them by pulling the last 2 housings off the trans.

If you have done a clutch before and can deal with the throw-out bearing and clutch fork, then it should not be a problem. Once you remove the bell housing, the main bearing can be removed with two prys, one on each side of the bearing. You may want to have a friend help hold one of the prys as you will need to tap the prys (alternating to each side) to unseat the bearing. The special tool referenced in the shop manual is only a shield or protector you slide in between the syncros to keep from damaging them during the removal. You can probably substitute a sheet of cardboard for that. When you get the new bearing up against the box housing, you will need a piece of pipe (flat on both ends) to hammer the new bearing into place.

If you use the pipe method to reinstalling the bearing make SURE its super clean inside or else it will get dirt and crap down in the trans when you hit it with a hammer.

jd to rescue (That couldn’t be more true!)
Thank you jd that was exactly what I needed to know!!
I'm pretty sure it's the main bearing because I can hear it the most with the clutch engaged in neutral and it completely goes away when I push in the clutch petal. I won't know for sure until it's done, but I'll bet you a cheap lunch that's the one. .
