Question for for those who have done thier own 5th gear sync.

I took my engine out for a port job, and figured since it was out, I would fix my 5th gear. How did you guys remove the output shaft bearing. I could not find a gear puller long enough to fit over the output shaft. I tried to pry, and everything. I am thinking that the dealer is the only one who has the the correct puller.

I can not help you with the synchro but you can replace the shift select spindle by the upgraded one. It was a recall.

Maybe you already did it.

The dealer sells it at part of a puller set for several hundred for the whole set. I tried looking for a single puller but couldn't find one off the shelf. I would either make your own longer arms for your puller or just take the trans case to a dealer/repair shop and see if they'll pull it off for a small fee or something.

To repeat the other post Garfinkle rebuilds tranneys and he made long links out of tool steel. Just get some stock from home depot or Lowes or hardware store.

I heated it up till if was hotter than fire with a celephane (sp?) blow torch, that cause it to expand then I hit it with a hammer. Worked like a charm. I wanted to replace it anyway. The new one was only like $20 from the dealership. Then when I reinstalled the new one I just used a long pipe that was about 2.5" diameter and a hammer. Worked like a charm. The only thing is make sure your pipe you use is real clean in the inside cause if its not dirt will fall down all into the bearing when you use the hammer.

BTW - Rob at Pineapple racing gave me this idea

Garfinkle never heats a trans part, what if you change the temper of the part or the part under it . how would you feel if you payed someone to do your work and found they annelded your trans main shaft or a gear.

You dont think they hot when your spinning your car at 8000rpms??? Anyway you just do it long enough to get that part hot enough and you hold it back far enough so that its not shooting flame onto everything else in the trans....just shoot the part your after......as a matter of fact after doing that I could still touch the main shaft about 2" up from the bearing so there must not be much heat transfering from the bearing to the shaft.

you need the factory puller set, or some really long bars.

I used flat stock, drilled one hole in either end, and used it as an extension. This was on a FC, but same puller will work. Also needed a socket that was two feet long....bought a standard socket at Sears, cut it in half, and welded it to a pipe that was 2 feet long! Not sure if this is necessary in this case, but hope it's helpful.
