This is not usually a sign of a bad CAT. A red-hot CAT during normal (not full throttle) driving is usually a sign of excess un-burned fuel entering the CAT. The CAT can actually get hot enough to destroy itself or start a fire.

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR MORE THAN A FEW YARDS UNTIL YOU'VE FIGURED THIS OUT AND REPAIRED IT.

Something (stuck injectors, etc.) is causing excess unburned fuel to exit the engine!

clogged ..done ..kaput..shot..fried..no good..crapped out..and no ..it's not normal..you can replace with stock or go high flo..or test pipe or be "inventive" and hollow it out..fix it .it's unsafe to drive ..you will damage the engine with a clogged converter..MY $.02..

I still have the original main cat (52K miles) - the pre-cat was replaced w/ a DP.

You can just see down the one end with a flashlight. If you shake it good and nothing comes loose, it's probably just fine. Cats clog because the main matrix element breaks loose and wedges shut in the housing.
