I just got a REMAN ENGINE that I bought from Ray at Malloy Mazda,its a 13BREW for an FD.
I was planning to have the motor ported,pinned,oil&coolant passage mods ect performed.But the problem is that upon arrival it looks like the Rotor housings
are used among other things,it seems like they just repainted the Housings.

"Simply put the engine is not a choice REMAN" or so the builder thought.
My question's are.Is It possible to return this engine and or exchange it for another one?
If not should I proceed with the mods to it or do they void the warranty?Or install the engine as is and if it breaks the warranty will cover it?

Please note the the engine has yet to be dissassembled and I couldn't talk to Ray at Malloy Mazda because he had already been gone for the day on friday.
But I asked Ray at Malloy Mazda about the quality of the latest REMAN ENGINES
he assured me they were all good,but what I received seems to be otherwise.

Any input would be appreciated.

 

Remans are just a standard rebuild. *New* parts are only used when something is not within spec. It's not required that all parts are replaced for new ones.

 

i believe your mods will void the warranty, but read your paperwork it will tell you. Also, why didnt you just have them do all the work it would only be a few hundred dollars more and you wouldnt have to tear a new engine apart

 

Depending on what damage was done to the original engine, it can be cheaper to start out with a reman.

 

Remans aren't bad for the money.

 

They are a great starting point for the average beat up FD engine, but I would be really hard pressed to drop one in and run as-is...and I am not talking about feeling the need for porting or other mods, I am talking about the way seals and gasket maker are installed.

Yours Kevin Landers are you not?Thanks I appreciate the input you guys offer.Yes i had already read through that Engine Building thought's thread from Pineapple Racing.And as Kevin mentioned about the way they do gasket's on these REMAN ENGINES,their's excess sealent all around the oil pan and front cover apparently someone went crazy with the silcone.

After many months of doing research I decided on buying a REMAN ENGINE and building up from it rather than rebuilding the engine currently in the car.Can anyone tell me if it's possible to return or exchange this ENGINE?

 

Why would you return or exchange it? If those aren't new rotor housings, then they are in-spec/low mileage ones. It's a remanufactured engine, not a new engine. What exactly were you expecting?

 

i was one of the lucky ones and got new housings and rotors. they normally choose used housings and rotors that are still within spec to rebuild their engines. but about the warranty, if it is a Factory Mazda Re-man, the warranty only covers the engine, provided that it has been properly broken in and has not been overboosted, modified, or has overheated. so if you were to rebuild it, yes, you would void your warranty. you should check back with Ray and see what the return policy is. if you cant return it, drop it in and rebuild your old one.

 

If I'M not mistaken from one of the conversations I had with Ray at MALLOY MAZDA he told me all these engines come with new housings,which is what I wanted.Had I known It would have come with used,I would have simply rebuilt my engine with new housings.The ENGINE in the car has only lost compression in one Rotor and is not blown,it still starts up on the first try.Basiclly I thought I would get a good deal with a RE-MAN engine as they tend to come with new parts,at least from what iv"e read on this forum.Hence I thought it would be less expensive than buying all parts individually for a rebuild.

 

Key word "tend", not guaranteed new parts. Whatever is within spec is free game for the rebuild shop Mazda has contracted out to do the rebuild.

 

My only experience with a reman is when i got it it had a missing side seal so in my opinion you should get all new parts from mazda

 

The reman in my car purchased in 01' had a leaky oil pan and front cover within 2000 miles. It really is a crap shoot whether you'll get a good one or not.

 

The best thing you can do with a reman? have a professional take it apart to port it, re-clearance all the seals, and reseal the oil pan and front cover properly.

 

I think there may be some confusion as to what's new on the reman. As I understanded from Ray, when I bought mine a while back, the manufacturing facility no longer re-use any "rotor" housings from cores or otherwise. But the end housing and intermediate housings are re-used if they are within spec. These tend to be repainted as part of the reman process.

 

I can't see them not reusing housing that are within spec. I think it's a potluck on whether or not you get a reman with new housings or not, but you shouldn't expect it.
