Question About Mini Battery

I am considering relocating my battery, but I really don't want to cut up my rear bin to do it. I had thought about getting one of those mini batteries, but I'm afraid it wouldn't be able to power the car with my stereo system and still be able to crank in the winter. So I was wondering if it would be possible to run 2 of the mini batteries in parallel, one in the engine compartment and the other under the rear bin (or both under the bins)? Any thoughts on that?

i think you should have no problems using 2 small batteries as long as u get a regulator. Best bet is to ck with your nearest stereo shops.

You can try running 2 mini batteries, I dont know anyone thats tried that. But I can tell you this, it only has about 260cca. I didnt like that battery, it seemed to have problem staying charged when I'd crank up and drive short distances (like 5-10 minute trips). When I'd crank up to drive 10 minutes to work, then 5 minutes to lunch, then back to work, then back home....after about 3 days of that it would be dead. I think it just took too much juice out of the battery when I'd crank then I wasnt driving long enough for it to charge itself back up.

I got a 51R battery for a Honda. It works MUCH better, never had a problem with it

The oddysey 925 will fit in the rear bins without cutting anything. I haven't used it in the winter though so I can't say anything about how it will do... I do know it has higher cca than the mini battery though.

I'm not sure about the 925 but I know for the 680 mini shows cranking amps of 680 for 5 second then it drops down to 265....BUT what they dont tell you is that the 680 is for a 7 volt system not a 12 volt system, its because it was designed for jet skies and motorcycles. On a 12v system they told me it would just be the 265cca. I got this information from my local Battery Mart who got it for me from the manufacturer.

Anyway, my point was that when looking at the cca for the 925 I would go by the standard cca not the 5 second cca that they list.

Stephen

The intercooler I'm thinking about getting will require the battery to be relocated. I would rather keep a stock size battery, but where could it be mounted?

two 680's = one 1200 and will have the posts in a normal position with little bin cutting. The 925 may work if you flip it on it's side but then you have to figure out how to tie it down. I have a 51R but after my regular 51 only lasted 11 mo, i'm not sure about using it. My 680 lasted over a year and i'm trying to recharge it. i'm waiting for a replacement charger. ...ok, UPS just knocked and I tried the new charger but it shows the battery fully charged. I test the Optima as 10v whn off the charger and 13.4v when on it. I test the Odyssey as 13.4v off and 14.1v on. I can only assume both have bad cells that can't be recharged.

I really don't want to take up what little hatch space available.

ok, just tried charging my new 51R and it only took about 15sec on both Sentinal chargers. Now I know for shure they have bad cells.

I called Odyssey yesterday about charging since I saw a web page that showed the 680 needed a 3amp charger. He told me that it didn't, that it was a normal battery and the higher the amps the faster the charge. If it's a 6v battery, was this guy an idiot? He did mention that Ford used tw 680's on their GT-40 but whether it was "only" for the concept car or they still use it I don't know.

Since they both failed on me, I can't decide. Although I can tell you Optima yellow is only one year warranty and Odessy is two years. http://www.odysseybatteries.com/accessories.htm

I've had the PC680 as well for over 10 months...no problems what so ever if you drive your FD daily. But if you let it sit for more than 5 days, it might or might not start (alarm). This is with Cali weather.

Btw, I was thinking about buying a second PC680 and running it parallel...just so inever have to think about it again. Anybody know if the a single 51R would require cutting?

Both require cutting but with the PC680's you can use screws instead of the GM post and not worry about them hitting the lids. Since the bin is rounded, the rectangular battery's don't fit flush. If I remember right, 2 680's only need a notch cut for one of the battery corners (using screws & not posts). The optima would require the bottom being cut out as well (because of posts).

I use the Odyssey PC680 and I have had no trouble so far. My car was down for 6 months and the battery was dead so I hooked it up to a little 1.5 amp trickle charger and let it sit for about 12hrs. After that it was back to normal.
Since my car is not a daily driver, I ran a plug down to the front bumper opening for the little trickle charger. This way I can just plug it in and the charger just cycles on and off when needed. I've been too lazy to hook it up lately but it is there just in case.

Heath, how often do you drive it? Mine is not my daily driver either, I mostly drive it on the weekends. I'm wondering will the charge drain after 5-6 days?

Stephen, what are the dimensions of the 51R?

I just did a battery relocation and used the odyssey 925. Actually my buddy owns a stereo shop and we used a new stinger power cell. The new ones are red. They are made by odyssey. It is a 925. It fits perfect in the bin. No side to side or foward backward movement. It cranks stronger than my regular 51r that I had in the engine bay. This could be because of less heat by not being in the engine bay. Make sure you use 2awg wire. You do not even have to cut the bin for the wires. there are two slots for the lid hinges. Just make a round hole at the bottom of the slot for the wires to come through. It isn't noticable. Also, use a 150 amp breaker. Stinger makes this as well. mount it next to the battery.
