Question

how little money could I pay to get an rx-7 (Gen 3) perferably auto, whats the cheapest anyone has heard or seen of????

It matters what year, miles, and condition. For example, my car:

1994 RX7
Touring, Bose Sound, Leather, Montego blue, and 55,000 miles.
I got it for $18,500.

Now this is a good price. The car had very minor scratches but who cares, It's an FD!

You could buy a high-mileage, abused automatic in the $8000 range ... I've seen them as cheap as $6900 two years ago. Should you? HELL NO. You'll need a new motor in a month, and that's $4000-5000 right there. And don't forget insurance ... twin turbo, two seater, small numbers ... those are the magic formula for high rates.

I'm saying this as friendly advice, not condescending dickwad -- Please go buy something that you can afford to own and not try to look like you have more than you really do.

I'm not at all trying to look like I have more money, and I resent that remark. My dad owns the fastest M roadster in the world... so money isn't a big issue, but I want to earn my car, not get the cash from my dad, I know about rotary engines and the probs and everything. And I could go out and get one w/ my dad's money... but I don't want that... I'm trying to find a way to purchase a damn good car at a good price...

Last week I saw an FD Red, Touring 5 speed for 9k in the paper. Look for the deals they are out there. But like DK said if the price is low your most likely going to have to put some $ back into it in a month or so. any way you cut it plan on 2k of upkeep a year.

I got mine for 13k +tax and lic pushed me up to 15.5k. Car had 75k miles, ran good, body and interior in terrific shape, Automatic BTW.

Then I took it to stereo shop and had an upgraded alarm installed with remote keyless entry, and killer stereo. 1 month later had $1200 for a rebuilt turbo, and this month $900 for new vacuum hoses, plugs, wires, antenna, and a few other things.

If you can scrape together $400 a month I don't think it would be bad to have mom or dad co-sign a loan for you, that way you could get an FD in good shape.

Damn I wish FD's were mid teens when I was in high school.

hmmmm, judging a man by how he would individualizing his car??? well, whatever, if you don't like what I'd do with my car, then just tell me that. But to make such a broad statement as to say WHO the car is and isnt for is rather arrogant... I dont know...you're buying an extremely high performance car to perform all these cosmetic mods...and NOS?!?! You've been playing too much Gran Turismo and watching too much FATF.

Buy an automatic Supra NA if you're just interested in looks.

You cant low-ball when it comes to RX7s. One of two things will happen-- it will break, or you will crash.

Judging from your post, I will have to agree; the RX7 is not for you. Your first priorities should not be on cosmetic crap like neon lights and sound systems, they must be on reliability and safety.

Riiiiiiiiight.... make sure to skip all the reliability mods and straight for the body kits. Who cares if the car doesn't run, it'll look good sitting next to your dad's m3 right? Oh yeah. make sure you get the real agressive kits. maybe the car will look like it's moving.

Seriously though. Don't think about getting an FD unless you plan to treat it right. You will be buying an 8 year old car! There are owners on this forum with that many years of experience (not me, I'm a newbie) in making sure these cars are appreciated and kept in a manner where they will last. You're going to get blasted if you throw out suggestions like you did in your post, you should have seen it coming.

Its a good car in good shape, and the FD body has always given me goose bumps, I love the rotary in any form. I have driven both manual 5 speeds and auto FD's and the performance difference isn't very big. The car goes faster then I ever need to, looks like its a widow maker and drives like it to. Love at first sight.

Sure If I were ordering the car from the dealer I would go manual all the way, But this is fine for now...Its not like I go to the track daily and need 400HP to go to the grocery store to pick up some eggs. (not that 400HP is to much, even to just get eggs )

Auto FD's aren't too bad. There's a few members here that have some real nice ones that put down some good numbers. The only problem with the autos is that it becomes increasingly difficult to modify when the HP and fuel requirements start getting up there (fuel management/ECU incompatibility issues)

I totaly see what your saying about the fuel management and ECU stuff, I think thats why I want to order a Banzai. I think I could be happy with that car. Do you have to supply Pettit with a FD or do they have them waiting for conversion orders?

This is getting kind of OT, but it's either or-- typically you'd have to donate your car. Are you serious about the Banzai? I've heard various opinions on them...maintaining an FD would be a cakewalk in comparison

Well I read the article on the web and a few other places on some info, I assumed the reliability would be better because of the quality parts, but cranking 500+HP.. I always thought that there would be other problems. If it is allot more trouble then a moded FD then forget it. I still plan on buying a 5 speed down the road.

I fear I'm coming to a toss up next year of either getting another 3G (and selling my auto) and mod'ing it or an RX-8.

NOS is very feasible on RX-7's I've been around people with all the mods I spoke of on that post. If you gear your car right, treat it right, know how to drive it, you can safely run NOS... but thats the challenge

Well, you could have a silicone fetish. IMHO, I think that any mods other than reliability mods on a 7 is defilement. Fortunately, my ride is mostly stock, but it's got this ******* big ***, 2 tier spoiler on the back that's (to me) an eyesore. Perhaps I will change my ways as the years go on. I am constantly remimded this is the way life works, but don't be surprised to see a used "big ***, 2-tier, fire engine red spoiler" on ebay. PRESERVE HISTORY DAMMIT!!!!!

oh, and BTW: My father bought my car for me, because of this I love it that much more.
