Purchasing RX7 3rd gen

Hey guys,

I want to purchase an rx7 and was wondering if anyone knows where i can get a boost gauge so that i can do a quick test on the car to see if the 10 8 10 boost pattern is okay....

also do you guys recommend purchasing a 93 with low mileage or a 95 with higher mileage???

I started one with 70,000 miles on it..excellent condition...but it idled a little rough...i can feel a "mis- fire" here and there...i didn't drive it though....it is a one owner and driven buy an older guy...but when i reved it....it reved fine..wondering if the mis-fire was do to it being sitting and cold.....

Any FEED BACK would be great...i've read a lot of the online stuff.....and wondering if i should have an expert look at it......

Thanks....

You most definitely should have an expert look at it.

You can get an inexpensive ($60) gauge from rx7store.net

Rough idle was more than likely to do that fact that it was cold, but you won't know for sure until you drive it.

I'd say lower mileage the better.

Here's the best thing to do:

Post in the regional forums, find someone who lives close to you and knows about FD's. Next, ask them to go along with you when you check out various cars. They will be able to assist you in checking out the cars and finding the better deals.

Does that gauge come with the vacuum line that goes to the nipple???

The RX7 i saw today was great in condition both inside and out...so it looked like a safe buy....i'm sure the boost pattern will tell all....only thing i'm worries about is the primary cat going into the 2nd.....the car has NO modifications what so ever.....

The miles are probably more important than the year, but it also depends on if it has a rebuilt engine or not. The boost gauge should come with the vacuum line. The rough idling is probably just the car warming up. I wouldnt worry about the car being unmodified either, just means less chance the car was ever driven hard. I would recommend finding a local FD person who can help you look at cars too. Good luck.

If possible, try to look for FDs that are semi-close to a respected rotary shop and just have the car sent there to be checked out. If the shop says it's ok you could even have it shipped and save yourself a drive.

Good luck.

I too say go for low miles. Rebuilt motor or not, the motor isn't the only thing that goes wrong on the FD. bring a boost gauge, and you can even use a regular compression testor kit to test the rotors/seals.

The boost gauge helped though, as i passed up an rx7 that had no boost after 4500rpm
