Purchasing RX-7

Hello I am looking to purchase a 1993 rx7. I have always wanted one of them. Here is some info about the car. I want to know if this is worth it?

Clean titled silver FD with red interior, RARE...Comes with Gram Lights gold rims, Apexi intakes, HKS Cabon-TI full catback exhaust system, Apexi intercooler, Fluidlyne radiator w/aluminum air separator tank, Megan Racing downpipe/midpipe, Ignited push button start, & an Apexi PowerFC w/Commander that hasn't been installed yet. This beauty has new turbos, clutch, transmission, tires, & the engine only has 30K miles on it while the chassis has about 150K miles. Must sell this week or I'm just going to keep it, $7K firm with minor issues.

I contacted him and he says that the minor issues are overheating in the heat, the drivers side controls don't work and there is no AC because previous owner took it out.

What I really want to know is, is overheating a big problem? I hear its a pretty big problem with rotaries? I don't know. He said it only does it when its hot. Maybe a fan isn't working? I don't know, but is that going to be detrimental to the motor if it happens once?

Is this car worth it?

Sounds like a pretty good deal. HOWEVER, It shouldn't be overheating, even in the heat with a Fluidyne. How does he know it is overheating? Does the needle move into the red? Add coolant light?

That many mods and he hasn't installed his PowerFC? That should of been the first thing installed. Get a compression test on it even though it "only has 30k" with that many mods and no way to regulate the boost from creeping/spiking, it might be popped.

How does he know (...and classify) that overheating is minor? Overheating is overheating. Overheating is never minor but more of caution< urgent < bad. I didn't see an aftermarket water temp gauge in his mod list so I'm assuming the seller has referenced with the stock gauge. Truth be told, we all know what is signified when the stock water temp gauge even barely moves beyond half-way mark... (considering it's the common faulty "linear" gauge).

Cool tip if you want to learn more about the RX7 pre-ownership, post-purchase and mechanics. I would recommend searching the archived forums with a web browser that features "window tabbing." As you search, literally click (new tab) on any/all links that relate to your question. That way, all your threads will neatly be nestled into one window and instead of 20+ windows separately opened (...kinda' like consolidating into one bill versus separate bills.). You may even wander off with other threads of interest (even better). The more you tab, the more informed you will be. But make sure to weed out what is truth and what is gibberish. One way you can tell if it's good reliable post feedback/response is by checking the user/poster's post count (...not always true, but sometimes) and if they have contributed to the community forum before with interesting topic or even a How-to.

One more notion, you can search other "Buying an RX7" threads similar to your very own. Search their later posts after they had purchased the FD in question and see what type of experiences they've encountered after purchasing and if it was (1) good & informed purchase (2) could've done more research but it's manageable (3) financial disaster (FD). Picking up on some things like searching on random stuff is a big step in an informed purchase.

Okay, it's 6:45pm and it's time for dinner. Didn't mean to go on this long. Good luck, be informed and be excited! I'm out.

Add $6k for a rebuild and you will end up paying $13k for a 150k mile car, which makes no sense. You can get a running ~80k mile car for that.

So even if it has overheated before..the motor probably isn't damaged? He says that he just stops and then pours more water in then starts going again. Maybe Theres a hose leak?

"The previous owner never gave me the paperwork for the engine rebuild but the engine seems good. It overheats when it's at a stop for a long time, maybe the seals need to be replaced soon"

thats another thing he said to me.

Something is definitely wrong with the cooling system. It's possible it something simple like the fans not working, or something expensive and complicated like the engine needed a rebuild. We probably won't be able to diagnose it over the forum here for you. Even if it is something small, it could have already caused serious damage to the engine. I would put good money on that car needing a rebuild right away (Think upwards of $5,000).

doesn't really matter that it just does it when its hot but, more like if it has gotten to hot and why?
