Pulling out engine w/ trans questions.

I was have the FD R&R video and it shows how to remove the engine w/o the trans. To remove the engine w/ the trans. What else do I have to do?

I'm guessing:
-leave the engine bolted to the trans (durr lol)
-disconnect the driveshaft from the trans
-disconnect whatever supports are on the trans (I assume these will be obvous to spot once I'm underneath)

Anything else?
Thanks for any help.

Drain your tranny fluid BEFORE you start pulling it out of the car. It will make a huge mess. Pretty much you have listed the needed things that are extra. ...driveshaft,PPF,...You have to take off the shifter to give the trans room to drop down thru the tunnel. That is done frominside the car. Other than that I can not think of anything else. Have a helper pull the back of the trans down while you are lifting the engine out. ( to get it to clear the trans tunnel)

not worth it.... you have to have that special motor lift attachment that can make the motor come out almost vertical.... get a floor jack and some jack stands... a long 5' 3/8ths drive extension and some air tools... got mine out within an 1 &1/2! back in within 2!

You'll have to disconnect the tranny harness(or disconnect it from the computer) and the PPF. The drive shaft slides out of the tranny.

I find it easier to pull the engine without the tranny. Tried both ways and found it more time consuming to having to go back underneath to attach the PPF. I can normally pull the engine without the tranny in about an hour and half starting with pulling the car into the shop and finishing with the engine on an engine stand.

If you have a lift, it may be easier to just do it with the tranny but to each his own.

I took off the engien with the tranny at work on the lift, and i hated it. I ended up putting the engine first than the tranny. I realized people take it off together because they dont have a lift. It takes me less than 30mins to take out the tranny on the lift, i had to mess with the whole enigne and tranny thing to get it out, i had to partially drop the cradle to clear the tranny.

I actually take out the engine w/o the tranny because I don't have a lift.

Are you referring to a load leveler? If so I have one already.

This trans is not going back in, so it has to come out at some point anyways.

If you do it w/o the tranny, the time you spent underneath the car to align the tranny input shaft with the engine will ruin your whole day. At one time, it took us all day to just line up the tranny with the engine.

So when it was time to do my engine, I did it with the tranny. Took 1 hour to pull it out but 3 hours of prep work. Took 45 minute to put it back but 3 hours of work hooking up everything.

You need to disconnect the drive shaft, use wax marker to mark the location with respect to differential, disconnect all harness (make sure you mark them or take digital photos), remove slave clutch completely from the tranny and tie it out of the way, drain tranny fluid, remove chassis bracing under the tranny, remove shifter, use truck type jack stand so the car can be raised higher off the ground, the dp can be left on during install and removal.

I was just searching the topic and remembered a friend that taught me a trick for realligning the tranny input shaft... Slide the driveshaft input shaft into the back of the tranny and have one person twisting the driveshaft while others are pushing the engine tranny together and it will make it much easier to allign.

Tip: remove oil filter and/or heater hose hard line (the one that goes over the motor attached to the firewall) prior to trying to pull the motor with the tranny attached. Since you will have to pivot it back so far, the oil filter tends to get stuck on the hard line and make things very difficult.

I pulled the engine with the tranny attached with nothing more than the front of the car on jackstands and a plain ol engine hoist; no load leveler or anything. Just had one person under the car to pull the tranny towards the floor and then lifted the engine/tranny out will inching it forward. No problem.
