Pulling auto tranny?

Pulling my auto tranny this evening. Are there any concerns I need to be worried about? I have the manual and it seems pretty straight forward. Please list any problems you may have had.

Thanks,
Cody

The best way is to pull the whole motor and tranny out together. Trust me, you will have invented new swear words by the time you get it out if you try just pulling the tranny.

cgbtf - I have been perplexed by the factory service manual on pulling the automatic tranny. In fact the whole stumbling block to my rebuild hinges on the fact that I have yet to really discern the proper method to pull the engine/transmission. I really don't think it is any easy task to pull the transmission out with the engine in. I have about convinced myself to pull the engine and tranny together, looks to me like once you have the myriad of electrical connectors and oil lines off, pull the driveshaft, cork the output of the transmission, and pull the whole she-bang.

But then again, I've been saying this since January.......

Bajaman,
I will attempt the tranny pull this evening. I removed everything in the way per the manual last night. I will let you know how it goes. It seems to me that pulling the wholemotor for a tranny is much more work than is needed. I have access to a lift, transmission jacks and plenty of tools. I know the bellhousing bols will be a bitchto get to but after being under the car for a few hours i dont think pulling the tranny without the motor is goign to that hard.

I know pulling a manual tranny on an FD is pretty easy - never had to pull an automatic. I do know the autos are CRAZY heavy, so be careful with it.

Take your time with the wiring and tranny cooler lines going to the tranny - I know on 2nd gens the tranny cooler lines are anchored all over creation and they can be a pain. Not sure on an FD, but something to be mindful of.

Dale,
Thanks for the reply. I have already marked wires with corresponding connectors. The oil line should not be that big of deal. But you are right, the damn thing is heavy. Thats what the tranny jack is for. I will keep you all posted.

Good luck! I basically have the reverse problem as you, I need to pull the engine and would like to leave the tranny in place if possible.
Let us know how it goes.

yes yes yes

The tranny is out and the new one is in. No problems other than the top bell housing bolts. They are a bitch to get to but not impossible. Thanks everyone for the replies

Regarding the top bell housing bolts....how DID you get them off? Are there 3 of them?
I mean, I have my UIM off and it STILL looks like a bitch to get to those bolts!

You can get a decently long closed 14mm on to them and then use an extention bar onto the wrench to get a little torque. Once you break them loose, you can usually back them out with your fingers.
