I wanted to know if anyone has pulled the motor out with the trans still attached??? If so how high up does the car need to be? It is a pain in the ***???

I just pulled my motor with the tranny attached.

I had the front of the car up on jack stands.
Left the hood on. Just unbolted the PPF at the transmission.
After I lifted the engine a few inches, I took the engine mounts off since they seem to get ion the way. However, in retrospect, I had forgotten to disconnect a few lines such as the oil cooler lines, and the clutch line.
I did it without anybody helping me.

Awsome, so how high did you need to get the car up so that the rear of the trans didnt hit the ground?

From your pick if those boards are 4x4 I'd say the body is around 16" off the ground.

Is that about right???

Was it hard to keep the trany from hitting things like the fire wall? I was afraid of the tranny hitting something on its way out like the firewall but maybe there is more room than I think.

Thanks a Ton!!!

Although I am mechanically inclined and enjoy working on my car, I have never done anything as major as pulling a motor before. It was quite easy to do. I would have to say doing the vacuum hoses was more of a pain in the ***.
It helps to have all the right tools.

The car was exactly 16 inches off the ground measured at the rear of the front wheel well.

I needed this much room to get under to undo the PPF from the tranny.

The tranny is quite narrow and I had no problem with clearance at the firewall.

It really helps to have a load leveler. If you look at the pictures in sequence, you can see that the load leveler was used to balance the engine/tranny on the way out.

One more things:

Others have removed the engine and tranny without removing the hood. I didn't want to have any clearance issues at the top so I tied the hood to the ceiling to get maximum room at the top. In th efirst pic, You can see the string which is tied around the hood latch and the anchoring points of the garage door opener.

see thats my only problem, I dont have a cherry picker with a leveler. I'm going to use a come along setup from the roof rafter. It works fine for pulling a motor but it doesnt have the leveler capability. I'll have a friend helping me with keeping the motor tranny at a certain angle.

Well, from the looks of your pic, i could probably hook up a leveler to my come along setup, its just attached to the hook. I think I'm going to do that, I'll go get a leveler.

Thanks for all the help man!!!!
The pics were also a big help

Yeah, i am glad to be of help. I was going to post my big feat on the Forum and saw your thread - What a coincidence!

You can get a load leveler from Ebay for $16 if nobody else bids on the auction. It's about $24 including shipping.

I would also recommend removing the shifter from the transmission. Not necessary, but helps alot with clearing the trans tunnel.

Yep. I removed the shifter like it said to do in the manual.

Anybody notice that in the shop manual, it doens't mention anything about unhooking the fuel lines before removing the engine?

Thanks for the pics and info. I have been gearing up for the same job myself. Even bought the same exact engine hoist. These pics have saved me from removing my hood and unbolting the tranny to the motor from under the car. I am curious about how much more difficult it will be to get the shooting match back into the car.

I just put mine back in and it's quite a bit harder than taking it out. You need two people, one to push the engine toward the rear of the car and lower the engine while the other keeps it aligned and pushes the tranny downward into it's tunnel. Then once it's nearly down, put a jack under the rear of the tranny (near the shifter) to get it to level out and then use brute force to push the engine around until the motor mount bolts slide into thier holes.

It is HARDER w/o a leveler on the hoist. I used on with a leveler...you can do the install youself w/ the tranny attached.

If the hoist does not have one, then you will need an additional hand or two. If this is the case, then have the engine/tranny already angled before dropping it in. This allows the tranny to slide in, inbetween the body and the frame. Once the engine mount is rested on the frame, bolts in the holes, then readjust the links on the chain/hoist. Pull it back up to level it, then drop it back in. Engine mounts in, should be leveled enought to install the tranny mount....and thats it!!!

EASY 101.

Ok, I've got my comealong set up and I've got a leveler attached to it.

Here is my question, do you think it would be easier to just jack up the rear and leave the front on the ground instead of the other way around?

From the look of it that would seem to be easier cause it points the front of the car down.

Anyone tried it like that???

Thanks,
STEPHEN

I dont know what a come along set up is but you still have to LIFT the engine out from the bay even if the rear end of the car is jacked up. If you can't hoist it UP as you angle the rear of the engine down, the engine is not going to clear the front end of the car.

Yes, I started with both the front and rear jacked up about 24". As i started to remove the engine, I needed to lower the front end about a foot lower than the rear of the car so that the tail end of the tranny would clear the front bumper. A load leveler helps but the rear of the tranny droops regardless.

I pulled mine with tranny still in. it was pretty easy. The only tricks is to raise up engine first and remove engine mounts. then engine can slide forward and up, an away from tranny.

OK, I have a question. Do you undo the whole PPF and drop it then undo the drive shaft or just drain the tranny fluid and undo the tail shaft housing??? Seems like undoing the tail shaft housing would be easier but I dont know if something would fall out when it gets pointed toward the ground.

If you have to undo the PPF and drive shaft, how do you undo the drive shaft??? Also, that damn PPF is bolted on like a *****!!!!!

Thanks,
STEPHEN
