Prosport Gauges Have Arrived!!

Well I figured "Hey i am relatively new to the boards so what better way to give back then doing a review!"

So basics, I have a 1993 FD3S RHD, some minor mods. After doing some research on our awesome board I would add some gauges. I decided to go with Prosport for a couple reasons

First - Quality - All the reviews I have read have said good things about these guys (I even called and asked some questions) Hell they make the parts for other manufactures (from what info I can find)

2nd - Customer Service! - Customer Service is extremely hard to find these days it seems. I called Prosport and had a few questions regarding needle control (I went with the Performance line I wanted white with green lighting)

3rd - Looks - The gauges look very clean colours are crisp nice contrast between the needle and face and well what can I say I like something that when it is off it goes stealth (only contradiction to that statement is I own a 3rd Gen RX7, this car NEVER goes stealth lol)

So guess what came in today!! Yup you guessed it a nice big box full of gauges.
SO like any responsible adult I ripped into it to oogle my new toys. First thing I noticed was how well the items were packaged (I am way up in Canada so they had to go a long way)

So I got the package at lunch then had to wait the rest of the day before I could play with them. Well I have been home for a little bit now and got them mounted in a din plate, nothing to really note, very easy to install (which 52MM gauge isn't)
One thing I did not have a problem with is the instructions I have read that some people have a hard time with them, i took my time and did not have an issue. Just label signal wires and your set.

I will post more info once I have them installed and what not.

The gauges I went with are
Mech Boost Gauge (I had read that on some Elec Boost gauges the needle would not Zero)
Oil Pressure
Oil Temp
Water Temp
EGT / Pyro (I only went with one, then did some more research and found that I should run two, so the EGT will most likely wait until the winter when I can pull everything apart)

One other thing I noticed is that there is some bleed off from the red LED for the needle,( I can only see it when the green or white light is off) I am thinking I might use this to my advantage (long night drives, kind of nice to be able to turn the lights down)

congrats....

I have had them on my 3rd gen for about a year and NO issues.. I just added a fuel pressure gauge last week and everything is great. I have the electrical boost gauge and it's worked flawlessly and zero's out fine... I have the following..
Boost
Oil Pressure
Water temp
A/F ratio
Fuel Pressure
Along with their 3 gauge pod for the dash...

Looks good, I just recieved my boost, fuel pressure, water temp and triple pod from them.... Looks damn good, I must say.

There are gauges with superior quality out there, but, to each, their own.

My mechanical boost gauge is fine. I have an oil temp that has started acting up but I think it might be the sensor. Had them since December. Great customer service though, I emailed in about the issues I was having and had a trouble shooting reply back within 2 hrs.

I actually read the link David Hayes posted, I guess I should re word the statement " For the price these gauges are great" There were some others, I believe one was on the Subaru forum (I love google lol)
But one thing I kept thinking while reading the - reviews is that they all seem to be about needles off center (elec boost gauge, I went with mech) and senders messing up. I can see a sender going squirrly is they are only grounding through the block and not through the wire, also if you are grounding through the wire you ground point has to be clean(installer experience talking there, clean as in bare metal not just using the screw)

Nice install, but PLX FTW!!! I'm going to love having only 2 gauges but being able to see 8 sets of data at once.

I don't see how a 3 year old thread is relevant. 3 years ago they may have had a problem, you don't know how there quality is now.

I've installed Prosports on a project car I had. Basically, you get what you pay for. Cheap plastic gauges, cheap wiring harness, cheap sensors.

The gauges I had the boost sensor (it was the electronic peak/hold/warning gauge) went out with virtually no use on it. Had to replace the sensor. The water temp gauge wasn't accurate long-term either.

Nice Greddy gauges are VERY reasonably priced. I have a Greddy peak/hold/warning boost gauge and water temp gauge in my car. Nice metal cases for the gauges, quality senders, nice wiring harnesses, etc. Dead reliable, dead accurate, and have been so for 5 years now.

Again, you get what you pay for. Don't expect Defi quality in a $60 gauge - there's a reason Defi gauges cost so much, they're top of the line, all quality parts, thoroughly tested and verified to be accurate.

Think of it this way - a few pounds of boost one way or the other can mean the difference between a fun car and a blown motor. It's not worth cheaping out on gauges.

I had ProSport gauges on my old project car, and like others have mentioned, you get what you pay for. They are a decent cheap gauges, but just that- cheap.

My water temp gauge was pretty inaccurate, and the electric boost gauges are notoriously inaccurate and super slow to respond.

For my FD this time around I went with AEM's new Analog series of gauges, super high quality and very accurate. They aren't much more than ProSport's, either.

To each their own, I like the look, I am going to be testing the sending units today at work to see how accurate they are, I will post my results. I agree that a full compliment or DEFI would be awesome, but for me and what this car will see for use I feel the Prosport will be more then what I need. I will post my test results later today.

Well it was bugging me so I did a test on the boost gauge right away lol. so here is what I found after doing 3 tests of just pressure and 3 of vac. I then alternated between vac and pressure.

under pressure (boost) the mity vac and prosport were dead accurate, what I did find is that the needle would hesitate just a bit, but would stop on the same mark are the mityvac.

Now under vacuum... the prosport was off by 1 consistently Mityvac would say 10hg gauge would say 11hg. The needle would not rest on 0 after a Vacuum cycle (cycle would consist of 0 - 20hg - 0) Needle would be accurate with boost even if it did not zero under vac (I am thinking that the zero zone is larger then the face allows for so the needle looks to be off of zero)

I will try to get to temps asap, I will post my results

Had you opened the thread, you would have seen that the thread has very recent updates in it with negative reviews about product quality, longevity, and accuracy. That would have required effort though (he says sarcastically)

Having a pfc+commander helped my gauge decision. By all accounts the commander tracks the basic gauge stuff well. So my Prosports are a secondary visual aid of the basics.

If I decide to get gauges like EGTs, wideband o2, etc I would likely shell out for top quality, as those gauges would be used more for tuning.

Hey guys, Its Ryan from prosport.

I just want to point out the thread david hayes posted up shows a thread from 2007. I mention this because we have updated many items and sensors since.

-Premium boost gauges are now adjustable up to 1-2 PSI depending on Elevation. (starting 1 year ago)

-boost Sensors were revised as of 1 year ago. Much more accurate and durable (Although they are not water proof). They may look the same but the ICB is much different.

-Water temp sensors have been replaced with a new sensors (Now on shelf shipping). WAY faster responding and accurate to about 1-2 degrees.

As we grow we have made changes and take feedback from you guys and many other forums. We have been makeing gauges for over 30+ years and quality/control is top priority.
We do use the latest Swiss stepper motor movements and air core components. We will stand behind out product and help anyone out

Thank you for all the feedback.

Ryan

I only saw 1 person with a recent post about Prosport gauges not working. Seems that they only lasted 10days and stopped working all together, my guess would be a fuse or wiring issue. There is also a few links to other boards that are from 2007 as well, seems to be a ruff year. The rest of it is talk about PLX and for the money you spend on them they better work right. Hey buy what you want but any review should be taken with a grain of salt.

I bought a gauge from a company out of Taiwan that isn't even sold state side.

Thanks for the updated info..

As of today, ALL 5 of my Prosport gauges have worked without fail....
My water temp gauge is very accurate. I have a PFC and the temp on the PFC is within 1-2 degrees of the readings of my prosport gauge.
The boost gauge is also within 1-2 lbs of the PFC so I am very pleased as of now.
I will say that the only thing I feel Prosport could do better would be to make the wiring thicker. The thin wire is hard to work with when trying to extend it's length.

BTW.. I daily drove my FD for 6 months for work averaging 60-100 miles a day in city trafiic as well as getting in and out of the car on average 5 times a day..

Let us righties know how it turns out. The pod is angled for lefties, so I'm kind of curious to know how easy the gauges are to read.
