Cool PRODUCT REVIEW: ChaseCam clamp camera mount (rear shock tower stiffener bar clamp)

Hi all, just thought I'd share a quick video of this piece in action. Look out, the video is 90+ MB and you should adjust your display for 16:9 aspect ratio ("widescreen").

RIGHT CLICK SAVE AS

After work last Saturday, it was so nice outside, so I decided to take the FD out for a 'lil rip Just got a new camera mount from ChaseCam, check it out:

http://www.chasecam.com/mounts/clamp.htm (@ top of page)

Anyway, didn't have a chance to push the car too hard, just some 1-2-3 gear pulls by my house. I'm going to the drag strip this Saturday (April 26) and a roadcourse event next May, so I'll update with more vids when I'm done. If anyone else has one of these mounts with some footage, please post up.

The mount seems pretty sturdy, several degrees-of-freedom for adjustment. I never noticed it, but there appears to be some padding on the shock tower bar... when I took the clamp off the padding was indented a bit.... hmmmm. I guess I have to get a tether for this thing so I doesn't fly off and hit me in the head

Last I looked, my rear shock tower was actually inside the car.

After looking at the video the mount seems very solid. I've thought it would be fun to video my son's and my auto-X runs. I've wanted something that would mount in that position so we would be able to see the tach and speedo as well as the tri-pod on the dash. It appeared that if the camera was zoomed in a bit, it might be possible to make out the gage and eliminate the back of your head. Not that there is anything wrong with your head mind you...

The price looks very reasonable.

I would like to use it a little bit more to see how it fares with continued use under harsh conditions (lots of vibration & lateral g's). I couldn't help but notice the indentations in the shock tower stiffener bar after I removed the mount. I wonder how that will affect the clamping force and the integrity of the mount... time will tell

I like the fact that you can see the gauges, etc when the camera is mounted in that location. The camera was not zoomed in at all in the video. Yeah, my head needs to go, it doesn't do the FD justice

I use this same mount for videoing track events. It holds up great and is easy to set up. It was also less expensive than the very solid looking IOPort mount:

http://www.ioportracing.com/Merchant...tegory_Code=CM

It does not have a full circle attachment to the shock tower brace and the ball joint to the camera doesn't look too sturdy - the camera would almost certainly come off in a crash. I tie-wrap the camera to the cross brace with multiple ties and hope for the best.

I see that ChaseCam now also has a rollbar mount for almost the same price, that is attached with hose clamps:

Smile more footage, drag strip action

Check out the video I made of my three passes at a local drag strip last Saturday. Notice how on the 3rd run, with all of that nasty wheel hop, the camera did not go flying I think the mount is pretty reliable, but you best tether that thing just in case!! I like the mount, I really like how you can see the driver shifting (both in the seat and the gears ). +1 for the ChaseCam clamp camera mount.

haha, thanks Yeah, my R/Ts were TERRIBLE. I was more worried about getting a good 60' time, so I decided to go when I was ready. But yeah, I was smoking everyone next to me, because they were pretty slow :-p I didn't line up with a "worthy" car unfortunately. I need a lot more practice, I short shifted a bit and need to work on coming out of the hole. Thanks for the advice though

Street tires, stock twins on somewhat low boost and hp/tq seems on target...if you shift higher and faster plus a better/harder launch, you'll squeeze off a high 12(lower your rear tire pressure to about 18 psi)

You said the clamp made dents? How bad? Could you take a pic so I can see
That spot looks perfect! Nice and concealed from obvious view.

Thank you I know that my shifting could've been faster and I could've wound out the revs a bit more. There's something about saying that you have a 12 second car that sounds cool. Even better if you're 11 or 10 secs

Is the clamp on the mount padded? I have a silver painted Tein rear strut bar, and I'd rather not scratch it if possible.

The clamp is very lightly padded, in that there is some soft material between the clamping surface and the object to be clamped. I noticed some temporary "dimpling" of the rear strut bar material after I took the clamp off...

I'm not sure how likely it is that you'd get scratches from the mount however. I'll take some pics for you guys and post up next week.

I guess it's up to me to test the clamp for scratching aftermarket STBs

Check out the attached pics. you can clearly see that little impression due to the clamp. I don't think it would appreciably affect a strut bar like the one you're talking about but you never know. BTW, this clamp is intended for a strut bar that has a rectangular cross section

Hey all, thought I'd post up more video using that neat little mount. I went to California Speedway here in Fontana yesterday and had the best time ever in a car. I've been on the track before with my integra, but it's no where near as fun as having the FD out there. Car control is completely different Anyway, check out my you tube videos.

I got my mount installed, but the car is currently on vacation, by which I mean she's throwing a temper tantrum and I don't know why. I'll get some videos up using the mount too as soon as I give the spoiled brat her bottle.
