?? problem with cam belt ??

HI all.
Just noticed a bloody horrible noise coming from the engine bay of my 93 fd.
On further inspection it appears that one of the cogs that hold the belts
appears to be moving.(as if it has worked loose)
All the belts are in place and running properly and the movement is coming
from one cog only. Its really hard to describe which one, but its the one
that is below the top one on the right hand side of the engine ( looking into
the bay)
Iam not good with engines, and after 2 years of ownership of my fd, i am
still learning on a day to day basis.
This car had a full engine rebuild 6 months ago, but has only done about
1100 miles since the rebuild.
ANY IDEAS ANYONE.
IAM FRIGHTENED TO EVEN START THE ENGINE NOW, LET ALONE DRIVE IT.

If by cog you mean pulley, then tighten the bolts that hold it on?

or mabye the belt is super loose, you can tighten that too..

Thats odd... Does the belt stop moving when you start the car?

Perhaps you should install a sturdier cam and tighten the cambelt?

I'd give you more details on how to do this, but I've yet to find the camshaft on my car.

Hope this helps,
Ben

Well, assuming that he's not kidding, we know it's not the alternator, or the air pump. Without looking for a picture or going outside to look at my car, I'd probably guess it's the power steering pulley. And we refer to these "cogs" as pulley's usually. Actually, I'll go downstairs and look at my car.

If it's the one on the lower right, it looks like the power steering pump pulley. This belt is shared with 2 other pulley's besides the main crank pulley. 1 of those 2 looks to be just for routing purposes, and I'm not sure what the one on top is (something to do with the A/C system maybe?). Anyway, until you figure out what that other pulley is for, I wouldn't drive the car (I wouldn't anyway, but I have a 2nd car).

Is it the smaller pulley with one bolt in the middle? Thats the idler pulley and they known to make a "bloody horrible noise" when they go bad. When you say it's moving, is it wobbling? If it is, don't start the car. Have it towed to your shop. The good news is, if it's the idler it won't be to costly.

I just took a look into my bay.

The top pulley on my car is the Power Steering. The lower is the Air-Conditioning.

Since the Air-Conditioning has a special type of pulley that is attached to the AC pump by a clutch mechanism, I would guess that a simple tightening of the bolt would not work here.

Instead, I would wait until the car is cold. I would then reach in from the top or bottom (depening on your access ability) to see if the entire AC unit is loose - rather than just the pulley.

If the entire unit is loose, then tighten it. Otherwise, if the entire unit is firmly in place, then maybe you should pull the PS and AC to see if the AC clutch/pulley is damaged.

My main drive pulley sheered off most of the 4 bolts holding it on. It was making a lot of noise and wobbling around. Yours sounds like its the belt tensioner??? here is a diagram let us know which one it is..

The one crossed out is the air pump
The small one closest to it is the water pump
The alternator & main drive are labeled
The tensioner is the one attached to the alternator
The two on the far right are power steering on top and ac on bottom

noisy pulley

Thanks all,
breakdown mechanic has been and confirmed it is the plastic bearing on the air con pulley. Will have to try and source one over here in the uk.
Looks easy enough to do, once i have the part.
thanks for the advice.
