Question Prices

Can someone tell me what the average price for a used FD auto is and what would be considered overpriced? Also is there much of a price difference between an auto and a manual? Thanks in advance for your help.

I've tried searching but didn't come up with any results.

Running examples range from $7,000 up to $25,000 depending on mileage, color, options, maintainence, condition and the number of engines that have been replaced.

search used car sites for typical values, most "NADA" type guides do not reflect the current market value.

Phantom Driver, how can you make a comment like that towards someone you know nothing about? You have no clue whether I can afford an FD or not.

With that comment all you've done is show how ignorant you are. I didn't come here to make enemies only to gather info on the third gen FD. If you don't have any info relevant to the question being asked then don't waste my time with your stupid answer.

RanFox76,

There is no way to answer your question.

FD's sell in a big range. There have been heavily (and tastefully) modded FD's that have sold for more than it cost stock brand new. There have been others that have been sold for bargin bin prices.

It really depends on the condition of the car, the modifications done to it, and how fast the sellers wants to sell the car. Obviously, if the seller needs to get rid of the car quicker, it's going to sell for a much lower price than it's worth.

The main thing to remember is just because Person X bought his car for $11,000 and it's in perfect shape doesn't mean that all FD's in perfect shape will cost $11,000. The car is worth whatever the seller thinks it's worth. If the seller thinks the car is worth $18,000 and you think it's worth $13,000 then he's not going to sell it to you. Telling the seller that his car isn't worth what he/she is asking for itt isn't going to change what he/she is asking if they really believe it's worth their price.

Basically, find a car that is in your price range, then check it out. If the car is in good condition, good for it.

Amen!!! Mahjik is so right about that..

FD's have gone up in price over past 2-3 years.. And I believe it will continue to go up.. As they are less and less available and few people are willing to sell. I'm definitely not going to sell mine.. if I did, its not going to be cheap..

Thank you mahjik...you beat me to it. Although not that funny, yes yes...it was a joke.

I will say that almost always, automatics will go for cheaper than manuals, unless things like condition and mileage play a large factor.

A Joke huh

A person with common sense would have put "lol" = laughing out loud or "j/k" = joking to show it was a joke.

I don't know Phantom Driver so I had no way of telling it was a joke. I thought he was actually being an *** towards someone he didn't know.

Anyway it's in the past now.

I don't know..I thought the long ............................................. would of gave it away.

Sorry. You say I should of put "lol", but someone with common sense would of known what Mahjik said. I bought mine for 8k. 61k miles, good engine, just has a boost leak atm. Exterior is almost flawless and interior is almost flawless. I looked at tons that were 12k in 10x worst condition. I've seen some go for 6k that were ready to blow up and take you with it. It all comes down to how patient you are and how long you are willing to search.

I guess I'm stupid I got a good deal. I like to think its because I was smart and knew what not to buy. Ask anyone that's in Hsv...they'll tell you I got a steal.

g/l on finding your rx7. You've come to the right place...best damn folks you'll ever meet and so much information that it would take centuries to write all out.

RanFox76,
As a fellow Canadian the average going price for a excellent fd will be anywhere between $25 000 and up. Just beware of cheaper ones. There isn't really any tuners up here for them so if you see a cheap one I would stay away from them. Stay away from any that have been owned by kids as they will drive them until they break and then try to sell them. Just make sure that you get them inspected at a Mazda dealership and most importantly make sure you get a compression test done. If you are looking for a auto one then it will be hard to find. Just becareful that you don't get screwed and buy one that you have to dump thousands of dollars into. There are a bunch here in Alberta. Just go on Canadatrader.com. Hope that helps.

I have been eyeing the market for over a year, started looking again very seriously about a month ago, and am about to buy today pending an inspection by Ivan (a minty black 1993 R1 with 44k miles for $16.4k), and I can can tell you that NADA type guides are actually the best reflection of current market value.

Many RX-7 owners are completely delusional when it comes to the value of their car, confusing the market value of a vehicle with what it is worth to them. Most RX-7s sell in the blue book $10k-$18k range; the former for fairly high mileage cars (100k miles or more), the latter for low mileage (< 30k miles) 1994 and 1995s. Forget about modifications - they add little value.

Sure, if you look at Autotrader or even this board you will find plenty of > $18k cars, but if you hang around for long enough you will see that they don't go anywhere.

Ballpark Figure

Okay since I wasn't specific enough with what I was looking for when I asked for prices maybe this will help.

What would be a ballpark figure for a stock or minimal mod, automatic 93-95 third gen Mazda RX-7 Type R [FD3S]? I'd just like to get an idea of what the average going price is for this car. Nothing more. Just some idea of a price so I don't get ripped off or I buy some pos with numerous problems. Thanks for your help.

If you do a search, there is a thread around here somewhere, where people listed how much, milage, and where from they bought thier car.
There are also tons of them with how much everyone pays for insurance, a pretty penny in itself.
when I was looking 3 years ago, the avg cost for a well running manual FD was around 17k, whether you bought the car for 13 and had to put in 4k to make it run right or just bought one for 17k flat out. I did look at an auto (88,000???) for 14k, but the guy was trying to sell it fast.

umm, have you tried kelly blue book, NADA, or how bout www.autotrader.com or www.cars.com to get an average price. You are a free thinking human being and anything in the world is only as much as someone is willing to pay for it. I suggest using those resources first and if you have any specific questions, we would be glad to help out.
