Price of a New Engine

Hey guys I was looking into buying a 93 body that looks good just has no engine or transmission. I was wondering who here has had a new engine put in (turbo's included) and a new transmission and how much it costed.

umm...depends where you get it from. Check with pettit, mazda crate motors are 2k I think. I just got one from mazda but I don't remember what exactly the cost was. Total cost for engine, labor, turbos, hoses etc. was like 5k

i am curious about this too i was looking at a car with no engine, nothing not even a core. when i shopped around online i saw most places were doing rebuilds and junk for around 2-3k but to have that done you neeeded to send them a core first. that engine you talked about for 2k is that a new engine that you can just purchase and it's ready to be installed and drive? i dont want turbos cause i was planning on buying a single turbo kit anywya. thanks

Exclamation

Keep in mind that it's more likely that you will get a rebuilt/remanufactured engine than a *new* engine.

Not that it's a bad thing, just something to keep in mind.

Thats interesting. Mine was shipped from Mazda Japan and it was a remanufactured one (this was about 2 1/2 years ago though).

2K sounds awfully low. Not doubting you, but I got a different answer from a local Mazda dealer. I was told $2250 for a Mazda remanufactured motor, and that was with you trading in your core. Didn't ask about turbos.

They have them 1950 + 1000 core charge.
That's the cheapest I found.
As far as the remanufactured motor is concerned, if you don't know the details, how do you know it's not remanufactured. Mine has a plate on it stating it's reman, but I could take that off and sell it as a new one.

The mazda blocks are short blocks -- they only include the block, plus oil-pan, water pump assembly, and flywheel. It is not an easy project to assemble a complete FD underhood from misc. pieces -- especially if you have never built one! If you are going single turbo, it would be infinitely easier as you would only need manifolds, tb, injector rails, alternator, etc. Of course, someone converting to single could donate you their useless solenoid racks, etc. Not a fun project no matter how you approach it. I would recommend finding a complete long block used (junkyard or other) and then rebuilding it, or using its short block as a core -- this will get you all of the components you need to swap over. I have some REW's that are only missing a solenoid or two if you completely strike out on your search... but I would recommend finding one complete -- blown or not!

opps, completely neglected the turbos... yep. Definitely find a complete used long block w/turbos to start with unless you are building it for a single from the start! Again, someone converting to single would be a benefit here, too, since they could provide you the twins with all of the needed lines.

wow thanks for that bit of info. i actually am planning on going straight to a single, prolly gonna go with a t04s since it seems really well priced and has a pretty broad powerband range from what i hear, plus of course the nice kick of a good sized single. i'll keep on the lookout for one with a core thanks again.

$2k for a Brand new engine. Sounds good...but I've never heard of a Brand New engine for that price. Are you sure it's not a reman.? If that was the case....everyone would opt for a Brand New engine for that price as opposed to a reman. for the same price.

Just because it came in a crate from Mazda does not mean it is new. On the other hand, there were 50 new motors put in the mix for MANA to use as "rebuilds", so you may be one of the lucky few.

I had my motor replaced. It totalled about $8700.00 after labor and some new hoses, etc. The motor was close to $3000. The new turbos were $3000. And the labor and misc. parts brought it to $8000. Then tax ran it to around $8700.00. You not going to get a shell, and spend $2000 and be driving around. It's definitely a great dream though. My upper and lower control arms were $2000. This was all done at a dealership also. Also I believe Mazda puts a stamp on the Remanned Motors. So it will have to stamps instead of the original one. At least that's what the Tech told me. Oh yeah...all motors are shipped in a crate vs. a card board UPS box. hehe couldn't resist.

$2250 is list for a Mazda reman motor which can be had for $1950 with Malloy or ask for a discount from your local dealer. I think a new trans is something like $2k+. Not sure what new Mazda turbos go for. If you have no motor they you have a lot of other crap which you will need (alternator, etc) not to mention you'll need a clutch. Sounds pretty expensive. You might find some of this stuff used from one of the Mazda salvage yards (MazdaRecycling, MazMart, KE Rodgers, Mazda Auto Dismantling) although the forum is probably cheaper.

How much can you get the body for without the engine and trans for? I am personally considering buying something along the same lines and putting a RX-8 motor/trans in it when they come out and turbo charging it. With less weight and size than the 13b-rew and a naturally asperated horspower rating not that far off from a stockrx-7 twin turbo rating it should be unbeatable once its tweaked and turbocharged.

Yes, $8k+ if you go to a Mazda dealer. The dealer will replace your turbos with the engine whether they need to be or not.

I did the same thing a few years ago. Wish I would have known about this forum then. I would have saved myself about $4k getting a rebuild from someplace like Pettit and had a better engine to boot.

Ok, while we are on the subject, my motor has 90k on it, and will prolly be needing a rebuild soon. I was quoted $6500. That includes a big street port, 3mm hurley seals, hayes coolant seals, porting the turbos, porting the manifold, new engine harness, new motor mounts, dowel pinning the motor, hardened staionary gears, and all labor to remove and replace the motor.

Is this a good deal? I plan on keeping the car for a while and would like to make between 300-350hp at the wheels when all is said and done.

Lemme know what you guys think, or if I have any alternatives.

Thanks in advance,

Jay
