Question Prepping Metal Gaskets for Re-use

I know some people will flame mechanics 101...but I think I'm going to re-use some of the metal gaskets (UIM, LIM, EXH MAN, TURBO(S)...)

I'm just wondering if there is anything I should do before reinstalling them, besides clean them...spray with something, or coat with something???

TIA

You can reuse them if they look fine. I just clean em good and use some gasket sealant when I put em back on.

Thanks, is it pretty obvious how much sealant to use?

Yeah. Just a thin coat all over the surface. If you put too much on, it's gonna drip and stuff.

I wouldn't use any sealant on the exhaust gaskets. It would probably burn off and then leak.

I've never used RTV or any sealant on the metal gaskets I've re-used, & I've never had a gasket leak.

Just clean the gasket & make sure it's not crimped, bent, or corroded...

Eric.

I did when I was putting my reman motor in. Turrentine video said to use it.
Yeah some of it burned off and caused lots of smoke. Scared the **** outta me cuz I didn't know why the car was smoke.

I gotta chime in here. Metal gaskets 101.

Metal gaskets are one time use only. They are designed to deform and seal once. You "might" get away with re-using them, but do you really want to do a job like putting on a downpipe twice just because you were to cheap to pop for a gasket?

Homey don't think so.

Bruce Turrentine is THE foremost expert on Rotary engines in America. Period. HE IS GOD. I would expect that if he does use a sealant on them it is some fairly exotic stuff, and his experience would probably dictate not only the specific brand and type but also the technique for applying it to make it work. Modern sealants are amazing, but if you don't know how to prep the surfaces and apply it correctly you are wasting your time. If you use a sealant and it "smokes" you used the wrong sealant to begin with. Game over. Get the tools out AGAIN. If you are lucky you have not ruined all those new parts you just strapped on.

Do yourself and your car a favor, do it right the first time, and save yourself a bundle by ordering your NEW gaskets from Ray at Malloy Mazda for the best price out there. He's also a nice guy.

Oh, you do own a QUALITY torque wrench, right?
If you put on metal gaskets without a torque wrench you will ruin them. They depend on very precise and even clamping pressure across them for a tight seal, and you can't do it by hand.

No flames intended here......oh WHAT THE HELL!:

I reused the metal gaskets on the turbo intakes. They looked clean and I used no sealant because I did not want anything being sucked into the mechanicals - cured or not.

No leaks, not worries.

But the next time I remove these companents I will put new gaskets in. I didn't this time simply because I did not know they were there and therefore did not have any on hand.

I reuse all the metal gaskets except for the lower intake manifold gasket. I rather use a brand new one. That $20 is very good insurance that i wont have to pull every thing apart to change the lim gasket. I would not use any sealant on any of those gaskets.
