Premixing. What is it? what does it involve? why do you do it?

Did a search but results were mainly about people doing it, not how and why.
Can someone please clarify?

Basically you dump your choice of 2 stroke oil or other forms of oil (Marvel Mystery Oil, etc...) in the gas tank at a pre-determined ratio. Different folks run different ratios and it's be debated on here before.
As for the Why? People who run older Haltechs don't have control of the OMP (oil metering pump) so they premix instead. Also it's required if you have blocked off/removed the OMP in it's entirety.
Some people also want to run synthetic engine oil in the motor, but have a fear that when it's injected by the standard OMP that it doesn't burn cleanly so they also premix.

The upside is it does provide better protection and peace of mind. However you've got to premix every time you fill up.

Rotaryaviation.com sell an adapter, that goes between the factory OMP and front cover. It has a nipple on it an you run 2 cycle oil from a reservior you supply. So you dont have to guess how many gallon to mix and stuff, just fill the resevior every time you gas up.

Im gonna order one this week. I think im going to use an oil catch flipped upside down as my oil reservior.

Another factor is that 2 cycle oil is made to burn in combustion chamber, not regular motor oil. So your rotors will not get gummed up from the unburnt oil. My buddy ran 2 stroke (mixed in tank), and my other buddy ran factory OMP, they both built and killed their motor with in the same time(one spun bearing, other cracked apex); during breakdown there was night and day difference of how much cleaner the premix is. Barely had to soak them in parts cleaner.
