Power antenna. No workie
got in the ride this morning only to find the power antenna not working. What happens is when i turn the radio on, you can hear the motor on the antenna but it sound like ****. and the antenna went halfway up and stopped, however the motor keeps spinnign for about 30 seconds. then stops. i got out and was able to move the antenna freely with my hand.. im guessing there is some sort of rod that is used to push the antenna up. My question is: Can this be fixed? or is a new unit needed? thanks.

Common problem with power antennas. The plastic drive eventually wears out and sometimes breaks, but its easy to replace.

If its not broken, this is a 15 minute job. But once broken you may have to take the entire antenna assembly out and apart just to remove the broken end. A pain, but not really hard.

Its broken. All it is is the gear piece on the mast itself which is pushed by the motor to extend the antenna up and pull it back down. It probably just snapped it in half or in several pieces like it did to mine. Its a very simple piece to fix. Go to a Mazda dealership and buy a new antenna mast for like $20 or however much they charge for it. Then open your hatch and pull out your jack and stuff in there then get a socket in there and unscrew the motors 1 screw that holds it in place out and remove the motor. Remember to remove the power harness and the antenna wire from it before removing it. One slides in and the other has a clip. Anyways, remove the single screw in the middle of the motor part that looks like a snail shell almost. take it apart and remove broken pieces. Now here's the tricky part. You gotta coil the new mast in there then close it up and reverse the steps to take it out, and viola! It sounds complicated but it really isnt at all. It took me about 15 minutes to complete the entire process and have it working again. If you lived close to me I would help ya with it but I don't know where virginia beach is........is it in Cali? Anyways, Good luck!

What's with the spam?
Anyway, I pulled mine out and I'm looking for a shorter, rubber antenna to replcae it with. I don't like mechanical antennas at all. they just break and look ugly.
