Popping Sound?

If I go a bit low in RPM's the exhaust starts to pop.
Can anyone tell me the cause of this and how to stop it?

what rpm's? What does go a bit low mean? Idle?1000 rpm or less? Sounds like it could be an air leak.(gasket)

It varies, I just let the car idle for like 3 mins and the rpms were up around 1800 RPMS and it just started popping abit.

Why does your car idle at 1800rpm ?
What are your mods ?

Mine pops a little when it justs sits there and idles. So does our FC and our other single turbo FD. I think it might be normal. Do you have a good pull of vaccum at idle?17-20 inhg. Just sounds like a little hiccup to me.

Yeah, and normally my FD idles around 1,000 RPM's its just when I just start the car it gets a bit high.

The vaccum is good. I believe its in the 20's.

Hehe, I also have a PFC installed, just need to learn how to use it. =)

Is it popping on deceleration (i.e. you press the gas pedal to rev the car, when you let off, it pops as it revs down)?

If so, that's pretty common with these cars when you start modifying the exhaust. It can be lessened by keeping up with normal maintenance (spark plugs, O2 sensor).

Thanks Mahjik.

During the next maintainence schedule, I will most likely replace the 02 sensor and the plugs.

hmm...

Are there any other modifications to the car I should do in order to stop the popping. It gets kinda annoying when i start revving the car and all of a sudden there are popping sounds.

Put the stock pre-cat back on if you want it gone completely.

It's not worth it. As I said, do the normal maintenance items and it will reduce it quite a bit. Also, if you are running base maps on the PFC, get it tuned by a professional.

My exhaust pops intermittenly. Usually between shifts, but sometimes @ WOT, or @ part throttle? I have a fully open exhaust with lots of mods. My car's been dyno-tuned, and the spark plugs are newly installed (BUR9EQPs all around). Is this normal?

just a bit of backfiring. the stock ECU is set up on the rich side. take out the precat, and/or the main cat, and you end up hearing it more (instead of it being contained in the cats).

the only fix is a computer which you can control and reduce the fuel.

Sounds normal then? Forgot to mention, I have Power FC. Motor is dyno-tuned to 10.9 to 11.1 AFR WOT, 4th gear, 7000 rpm. I have DP/MP/RB DT.

well, i would use the "common" over normal, but i guess you could say normal!

yeah, 10.9 -11.1 is definitely on the rich side. As far as the popping goes, all you really need to do is pull out a bit fuel at idle and on the lower rpm points. that'll clear it up.

back when i had a PMC unit, with all standard mods, except i still had the main cat, i had a lot, to the point of being embarrassing, popping. pulled out fuel from the idle and lower points, popping/backfiring gone.

now i have a PFC, with a midpipe/DP/PFS CB/cold air, PFS IC and zero backfiring/popping. in the past 6-8 months, i think i might have heard a slight backfire during hard driving at a shift point.

tuned 11.3-11.6 across range, 13 psi.

bottom line, just pull a little fuel out on the low side and it'll go away.
