Pop now pulsing idle
Pop now pulsing idle
So today I put my key in and turned the power on, did not turn the engine over, and heard a pop from under the hood. I checked all my hoses, easy because I have a single turbo, and they all look fine. I started the engine and it revved up really high. It settled down but not the idle pulses like crazy, 15k to 25k. It drives fine but the idle sucks. I switched my adaptronic from external map to internal map and the pulsing got faster do I switched it back. Any ideas?
Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. Perhaps the map sensor. Might just be a tear and not a hose that popped off. I hate trying to find vacuum leaks, they always seem to be the biggest pain in the *** for me, and they're always on a part or hose I checked 400 times. Good luck.
Was this the first startup of the day?
if you were say out running errands and stuff, the pop might have been from excess fuel leftover. I've had that happen to me.
The plugs will fire when the key is in the on position for some reason.
What do you mean by 15k and 20k? If you do not have an external map input you will need one in order to drive correctly. How else is the car going to get map reading?
Do the brake cleaner spray to find boost leaks.

I had been out all day. Now that you mention it, this makes sense. This happened once before and it blew the MAP and Boost Controller hoses off the UIM.

Since I have a pretty rich tune I can imagine I have un-burnt fuel in the block.

I mainly use the external MAP. I simply tried the internal MAP on the Adaptronic to see if the Mazda MAP was the issue...It wasn't.

I have since gone down a visually inspected the map hose and boost control hose and found no holes in them. They are the only hoses on the UIM and can't think of where any other leaks could come from and don't have any break cleaner at the moment.

When you are using the internal map sensor it should be connected to the OEM spot, and not a single runner FYI. It will be too " pulsey" of a single.
If the engine revved up really high it sounds like you have a major vacuum leak( assuming throttle body is not sticking, and cable is not over tightened). I would also unplug the factory idle control motor to make sure that is not the issue. When you say the idle pulses do you mean it surges between 1500 and 2500 rpms? Do you have a wideband on the car? Sounds like a rich/lean hunt to me..

Oh, good to know, I'll try this. It's so easy to switch between them on the Adaptronic software.

By the Idle control motor, do you mean idle control valve, or is there something else you're referring to?
Yes, surging between 1500 and 1500 rpms, and yes I have the Inovative O2 hooked up to the Adaptronic through the serial port.

If you are surging/have that high of a rich/lean hunt.
Check to see if the ECU is in some sort of cut.
The overrun fuel cut is something that could be triggered as pointed out by Andy when I was diagnosing my car.

Under power cut settings. Throttle over run.
