I wonder if some coolant flush or other aromatic solvent/oil that got into the cooling system caused that to fail - it looks decidedly swollen, as if it had been soaked in gasoline.

Maybe the combustion gasses along with some engine oil got into the cooling system when the coolant seal failed? I know there is some black crud in my overflow tank that looks a lot like oil (But, I don't have a coolant seal problem that I know of).
My fans are hooked up directly @ the moment and they help alot when i cruise around(88*- 90*) but the moment i step on the highway my temps go up to 96* and even then, when i slow down and cruise on the highway it still remains @ 96*.
I have a koyo radiator, FMIC and i'm also single turbo(400hp) and also have a apexi AST and i also use texaco coolant. I was wondering if i remove the thermo, if it would help out a bit. thank you

I'm looking to replace my thermostat around Christmas 2016 as preventative maintenance (when I'm scheduled to do my next coolant flush) so I'm researching thermostats now.
I believe my current thermostat (which is working fine) is the original 1992 thermostat still in there.

I just received a 89~95 Tstat from rx7.com and it doesn't have the rubber like dales dose . so those are OEM the one, i got is aftermarket?

i tested in boiling water and it dosent crack open untill like 183F, and very slowly opens up. at 180F it looks to still be shut . and it opens slowly .didnt get hot enough to see it fully open, and i used a crappy walmart meat thermometer
I recently had a year old Mazda thermostat fail on me. Luckily I caught it before the motor overheated. I think the problem is a lof of these parts are new old stock, so they could have been sitting on a shelf or in some warehouse for 2 decades.
A front mount in itself will not cause an rx7 to overheat. I set up plenty of cars that see track time with no issues with a front mount. The key is a robust radiator, and adequate ducting to it. That being said, a v mount is still the best option.
