poor gas mileage.?

ok i know its a rotary engine and gas milage aint to pretty on these cars but, with out hard driving am getting about 236 on tank or averaging about 15-14mpg around town. am running rich tho, i seem to back fire alot and when i gun it a huge cloud of black smoke pours out the back. mods. apexi intake and a 3in. turbo back with a high flow cat. it also seems my stock bov is seeping. i dunno if that has anything to do with any of that stuff.but thought i mention it while am complaing here. maybe i just need to get the car dyno tuned? please just offer some suggests, thanks

Buy a honda as a daily and you will solve all your problems. Until your not driving an FD around you won't improve your gas miliage. Just being honest.

If the boost sensor hose is disconnected or the sensor is malfunctioning, the car will barely run, so i don't think that's it. They are usually pretty bulletproof. If you want to check the hoses, it's the little rectangular box (says boost sensor) mounted on the driver's side firewall next to the brake booster.

Agreed.

Around town, I usually get ~17 mpg, but that usually includes a significant amount of freeway driving, so I don't think your mileage is that bad.

I usually get around 14-15mpg city driving. I got a little over 18 last time with mostly interstate, but there were a few boost controller tuning runs on it.

if luck is not on your side, maybe...
Your getting to much fuel, that's for sure, I've had a similar problem, and mine turned out to be a leaky injector...Does your ecu give out codes?

When was the last time you changed your spark plugs? That makes a VERY big difference.

BS. Are you actually measuring how many gallons you add and divide that into your actual mileage? Or are you just going "I got 200 miles on 1/2 tank according to the fuel gauge"?

Every 10 to 15K at the most. Some change them more often. Easiest way is to check them every 3rd oil change and see how they look.

they way it should be measured is have a full tank(i top mine off myself) drive until youre on fumes then divide the mileage by the capacity of the tank. it should say it somewhere in the manual or FSM. i get 16city and 27.6 highway, then again i drive an 85 GSL-SE. only 2 680cc injectors baby yeah!

No, that method will not work.

All you have to do is completely fill the tank, drive most of the tank, and take note of how many gallons you add to get it back to full. Divide that into the mileage for that tank. It's that simple and that is the ONLY way to accurately determine fuel mileage.

Why would you not do it this way?? I've never even heard of someone saying, just run it until you think it is almost empty then divide by how many gallons the tank holds, that's just stupid. Maybe fill it up run it out, get a tow, then do that.

I did get 9mpg one time but that was about 1/2 a tank track and 1/2 tank interstate back home. I figured it got probably 4-5 on the track.

Rynberg is saying not to assume that if the tank is empty you used 20 gallons of gas (Mazda says it's a 20 gallon tank). To determine mileage you start with a full tank. You run the car to nearly empty and then you write down how many gallons of gas the pump says you used to fill the tank. Then you know exactly how many gallons of fuel were actually used to travel the distance on your odometer.

Yeah, but do you blow 6' flames at dusk and have the police called to investigate the gun battle in the area when you let off the gas !!!
