Pondering the use of a Mass air flow sensor

Just curious as to what some of the more knowledgeable people might think of using the mass air flow sensor off of a 5.0 Mustang to test air flow numbers before polishing the internals (stock) and after polishing (if there is an increase in voltage) this should indicate some percentage of air flow gain......thougts on pheasability of this working ? ? ? ? So far we've hooked up a vacuum source with nothing over the opening to get a base line of max volatage reading no restrictions, then placed a componet over the vacuum source to see what volage reading we get with the part on the vacuum source (should be less than max flow unrestricted) and then we placed a polished a piece over the vacuum source to see if the volage reading had increased over the stock part.....would anyone think this a viable way for testing for improved flow ? ? ? ? ? and actually using this device to match flow components I.E. LIM runners, turbo compressor housings blah, blah....blah. Thoughts, suggestions, input ? ? ? ?

That makes sense to me. Basically use it as a poor man's flowbench in a way. I think the only disadvantage is it just shows quantity, not quality, of flow, which I believe a flowbench will show.

But, way cool idea!

Hmmmmm, this is one of the things I was wondering about. I would think (my opinion and nothing other than the voltage to base it on) that it would give the quanity, as for the quality I'm not sure I follow that as I'm looking to match say the primary compressor housing and the secondary turbo housing for the same value. We are going to cc the two and see if there even close to the same size, he's already found a sinificant difference in air flow numbers pri. to sec.. I would think if the throats are polished (like his parts) it couldn't be anything but quality air flow. I've got a set of Pettit high flows that I'm going to put up against the stockers, and then the ones James does up against the Pettit ones. I believe Pettit claims a 33 % increase in flow over the stockers so curiouds to see what happens. I've also got a 95 LIM that I was going to do the same with each runner and see if they can be matched. I'll keep you posted. If I can put each piece on and get some dyno numbers that would be the proof in the pudding so to speak ! ! ! We've already come up with a way to basiclly calibrate the MAF before (no parts installed max reading across the system), then take readings with each part and then recheck system after parts check. I couldn't think of any other way to see if doing the inside of components made a difference. Thanks for the input guys. Jack

That's more of a could we cnvert our cars to a MAF type system than using it for a tool fo part flowcomparrison. But interesting none the less. Thanks, Jack
