I drove my FD out of town tonight on a trip that lasted about 2.5 hours. When I was on the final stretch of highway going about 65 mph in 5th gear I noticed that my car was running really rich and my fuel pressure was going up to almost 55 psi when I hardly pressed the accelerator.

When I came to a stop light, I could see the idle jumping from 1500-2000 rpm and then it would stay steady at 2000 rpm. I pulled over at a gas station and checked out the engine bay with no luck. I reset the ECU in desperation hoping that it would fix the problem. It seemed like it helped because I wasn't running as rich as before but I'm still idleing steady at 2000 rpm.

Please help me figure out what this problem is because I am away from home right now and I want to preven any major disastors from happening. Thank you very much.

 

double check the throttle cable and/or the idle set-screws

 

Did your brake booster hose come loose on either end?

I believe the throttle cable is that wire cable that goes around the throttle body. I checked it and pulled it and it seems to work properly.

Where is the brake booster hose? Is it the hose that goes into the big black cylinder on the driver's side firewall?

 

After more inspection under the hood for loose cables or hoses, I found that there is a single wire with a harness mounted on the end of it just hanging. The location of the wire is around the area of the oil filter. It starts from somewhere under the intake manifold but I dont know where it plugs into. I believe that it has something to do with the cold start but am unsure. I wish I had a digital camera so that I could show everybody. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

 

There are a couple things there that it could be. In that area, there is the oil pressure sending unit, a temperature sensor, and the knock sensor. All of these are single wire connections. Based on your problem, I would check and see if that wire goes to the temp sensor. It is screwed into the block, near the oil pressure sending unit, which is below the oil filter.

 

You would notice if the brake booster line was loose. It's that 1/2 inch hose that goes from the passenger side of the UIM to the topmost metal pipe on the firewall. The metal pipe runs along the firewall over to the driver's side, towards the brake cylinder. I can't remember if there is another rubber hose on that end, though.

Anyways, what color is that loose connector that you found? How many wires does it have? Maybe that connector goes to your ISC (Idle Speed Controller).

 

the wire is short and does not reach the end of the oil pressure sender. It has the same type harness as the oil pressure sensor wire does. The wire is yellow with pink stripes.

 

My guess still goes to the temp sensor. I don't think there is anything else there that matches your description.

opps, i forgot to mention to check to see if its too tight. my friend could only idle at about 2500rpm and it was because his throttle cable was tighened too much. did you try to mess with the idle set screws? there are 2 btw on near the dashpot and one under teh throttle body

 

The idle screws and throttle cable will not make your car run rich.

 

It's the Map sensor!!!!!!!!!!!

 

Check for error codes again. All the sensors, solenoid, etc. on top of the engine that would cause the symptoms you've describe would log an error if their wiring was loose or shorted.
