am interested in buying this car. owner says its a 1994 r2 factory lightweight. somehow i don't think so, unless previous owner did some changes. boot spolier doesn't look right. now lower front spoiler, and strut brace is different. what do you gusy think ? any idea what this is ?

thanks

It looks like a base model with a '99 Spec wing.

Yes, the seats are non-suede, the wing is wrong, the strut tower brace is wrong....definitely NOT an R2.

Clean looking car though!

but the fact that the seats are non suede and it doesn't have the nice red strut bar im assuming its not. why not just get down on your knees and look for some oil coolers?

I'm guessing it's a base model - certainly not an R2.

What I want to know is where the back half of the tranny tunnel cover went?

Removed to make it lightweight.

Dave,

most of the later j-spec cars came that way b/c of the rear seat option.

whys the efini badge upsidedown?

that ^ and the lack of a R or Touring/Base lip may indicate front end accident/repair

Guys, this isn't a US car - it's probably a JDM car.

That said, it looks like a JDM base without the rear seats. Strut tower bar and wing are aftermarket.

The US models don't totally apply to the Japanese models, BTW. "Factory lightweight" is pretty correct - no sunroof, no back seats, it's an entry level car without the extra features. It most likely doesn't have the dual oil cooler either.

It looks liek it is a base 92 or 93 model. Isn't the interior a bit differnent on the 94 plus? (Passenger air bag?) or is that just for North American models?

And don't forget to check if they're both working...... automats also have 2 oilcoolers..... i know quit a lot of people suckered into the "2 oilcoolers" thing, when they acutally bought a automat --->manual conversion car.......with only the left oilcooler worked, the other was the transmission cooler (not hooked up)

Just my 2 cents......

It's a version II (93-94) JDM Type R II (not the USDM R2 which most people above are confused by),

It's a heavily de-optioned two seater variant of the Type R (sports model) - but in reality, closer to the base spec.

This one has an aftermarket strut brace, cat-back (looks like a Trust SP), upgraded ic pipes (not a good thing - because this often indicates the car has been boosted 1bar+), and a 98- adjustable rear spoiler.

forgot to add that the guy wants $13,300 for the car. I did take it for a test drive and it was a complete letdown. lots of rear end noise. owner did mention this to me though, said it was rose joint and/or bushings. sounded like the shocks were completely gone. The at idle it would rev smoothly all the way until red line and buzzer. but the moment it was under load in gear it would cough and splutter and you just could not get the power down. He called me later in the week to say that a vacuum hose had come off the turbo and that he had cleaned the plugs and that it was running fine now. I'm still sceptical though.
Being an import i've got no idea of history in terms of accident damage. And being over 10 years old the motor is most likely weak as well (previous poster said ugraded hoses may indicate higher boost at some point). there was also a lot of smoke on start up...and some on idle...althought that was with fouled plugs and vacuum pipe off (according to owner)

I dunno...maybe at this price all these things are priced in....but still....it may be money down the drain. any comments ?

I don't know anything about South African import laws/costs, but getting a FD directly from Japan?

For those 13.000USD it is possible to get a FD directly from Japan to Europe (the Netherlands) and our import laws/costs are outrageous.
For 4500-6000 USD you should be able to find a nice FD in Japan.
Transport should be not very expensive to SA.
Dunno about the import taxes and stuff in SA.

Idea?

Greetings,

Mireck
