piston/turbo experienced newbie here...

hi all, well this is my 1st post. i've been doing as much research as i can so as not to waste anyone's time or space on the board. i've been into the dsm (diamond star motor....eclipse) world for awhile now and within this past week, have found new reason to maybe get pulled over here to the RX-7 world. i use to have a pretty modded all-wheel drive eclipse with a 20g turbo setup and i've been getting ready to start a new project after blowing the tranny.

www.andrewwarren.com/images/l3r

that's a link for the turbo i presently have for my project in mind. i had that guy post the pictures for me but to sum it up, it's a dual ball-bearing turbo with a GT35 wheel supporting up to 630 horsepower. very easily putting an all-wheel drive car into the 10's (some guys hitting 9's). just wanting ya'll to know what i had in mind for my project and that i'm not new to modifying cars.

well anyway, that being said, and so that ya'll hopefully realize that i'm not a complete idiot (well i've never known much about rotorary engines though), i have some questions about these cars.

i'd maybe like to get a 3rd gen. but would have to be able to eventually get around 600 horsepower out of it. if i can't run low et's in a 1/4 and still drive it on the street i'd be disappointed. 11's is the highest et i'd want settle with in the end if i can't go lower.

i'd wanna go with a single turbo setup. maybe a greddy T04R or T67? not too familiar with these on an RX-7. i don't plan on just slapping all these mods on cause i need to learn about the cars slowly. but i do have goals in mind. overall i'd be spending less on mods for an RX-7 than what i had planned for my project. $7k for a stroker motor compared to a $3k RX-7 motor for example.

i don't know what turbos are best, best i/c's, best flowing exhaust (is there a problem with flowing too freely on these cars?), etc. just wondering if anyone could just point me into the best direction for best parts that they recommend, best vendors, and various in's and out's of these cars. i'm aware that it's easy to pop these motors when tuning, and the overheating issues. but i guess i have to learn things otherwise.

i know how to do everything i wanna do and have everything planned out for the mods on a dsm. but wondering if dropping all those plans for one of these 3rd gen cars will be worth it. i love the look, and the overall cost in mods would actually be cheaper. but need to make sure it's gonna be worth my time and dropping everything i've planned for. anyway, sorry so long but thanks for any input and help on my decision. thanks!

Dude 450rwhp will get you mid-low 11's in an FD and still be (Barely)streetable, 600hp will get you in the 9s BUT will NOT be streetable at all!
An FD is not really a good choice for a dedicated Drag car because the rear suspension is prone to SEVERE WHEEL HOP w/ anything over stock power levels, That require a lot or rear suspension mods to cure. for anything over 450hp you prob. want to go to a solid axle w/ 4 bar linkage for traction. the T04R is comon on FDs and should be able to get you to 450hp with the appropriate fuel system & large IC

600hp in a FD is pretty insane if you want to drive it on the street. like maxpesce said you only need 450-480rwhp to go low 11's or possibly high 10's if you can get the launch right, as long as you get enough fuel into the motor you will not have any problems going fast.

i would recommend the T67 or the T04R, they are both kick *** turbo's that give good midrange and excellent top end power.

your going to need a performance cooling systems if youwant to fun big power numbers from the rotary.

the intercooler is up to you, if you want the front mount I/C, or the stock mount I/C, or the horizontial mount I/C.
they all are good in their own aspects.

Well, with what you want to do in mind I'll make some comments.

First the most important thing you can learn about a rotary is how to tune it. You will find out first hand that dyno tuners are far and few for rotaries, however there are some good ones in Miami. If you want to make that kind of power you need a wideband and you really need to learn to run it yourself.

You need a newly rebuilt strong Mazda 2mm seal engine, dont get any hurley seals they break to easy. Get a nice big street port.

You need a computer such at Haltech, aem, Power FC, ect ect ect. Just make sure it will datalog what every wideband you buy

You need a wideband lol

You need all the basics like clutch, intake, echaust, front mount IC, upgraded radiator, gauges (boost and fuel pressure)

You'll need at least 850 pri and 1600 secondary inj, I'd run 2 intank Walbro 255lph pumps with a good fpr and about 55 psi of pressure.

Your going to need a nice big *** turbo.

Kazz rear and and axles, upgraded power plant frame

You dont have to worry about "too open of a exhaust" to be quite honest thats really bs on a turbo car cause the turbo provides a ton of back pressure.

600 rwhp in a 3rd gen will get you into the extreme low 10's or 9's on slicks. You can run super low 11's with 400 rwhp. There is a guy on the forum that busted 11.1 @ 121 with 390 at the wheels and slicks.

Dont listen to all this crap about streetable, a 600 rwhp rx7 is fine for the street....look at Steve Kan he drove his all the time. Just make sure you drive on drag radials all the time cause you will spin at any speed without them, even on the hwy.

Damn, I'm sure I'm leaving some stuff out but not much.

You going to find that getting a parts list to get a 600rwhp rx7 is easy, whats hard is making it all "right" and getting it tuned right. Even if you decide to go the dyno and hire a tuner route you still need a wb just to keep an eye on things.

Welcome to the board man. Nice to see you off dsmtalk.com. Im glad you have decided to go with rotary. My final goal is about 500rwhp. Im probaly going to go with the overpriced SR Motorsports Stage 2 KKK. Ernie T has the kit and runs 10's plus he drove his car home .

T88kid made 601RWHP on a T88. Not sure if that was streetmode but either way itll haul major ***.

For the suspension just get the pettit (i think) drag rear suspension. I may go for that.

Good luck in you endevers(sp?)..

hmmm, for some reason the replies weren't being mailed to me and i also had some trouble getting back onto the site. so figured no one was replying.

but anyway, i sure appreciate the replies. i've decided to go ahead and sell my big ole turbo for the dsm and go with an RX-7. i just love the look of the car mainly. always have but i've enjoyed 7k rpm launches in the awd eclipse as well. if i can hit 11's i'd be happy with that i guess. low 11's would make me feel better though.

now being from the dsm world, i'm use to running with a boost, egt, digital a/f (jumptronix), and fuel pressure gauge. not seeing the egt and fuel pressure gauges being used a lot.....or maybe i'm just not noticing. but if they're not being used, i'm wondering why.

as for the turbo to get my power, could someone give me the links for the turbo's suggested? what about the T-78? is it pretty good? where do i find the turbo's that you guys are talking about? and i'd like to go with an apexi front mount i/c but with overheating being a problem on these cars i'm wondering if a stock mount greddy or m2 would be good.

i've been on dsmtalk for awhile and have been a pretty hardcore dsm'er for awhile now (so i'll still be a part of that world) but i think i'll enjoy being over here. anyway, any input on this would be appreciated. thanks for the input guys.

Scott,

If you're looking for monster whp, check out the T51SPL from HKS. That is the biggest turbo on the market for our cars I believe. It has around 102mm compressor wheel! Also, if you'll upgrade to a fluidyne or koyo radiator with the aftermarket fan mod, running a FMIC will not give you any problems. Also, make sure you check out the Florida RX-7 owners club. Lots of very knowledgeable people there that could really help you out. I wish you the best of luck and will be looking for you on the tracks this summer. Laterz.

okay, well here's what i know that i WILL want to be getting.......

turbo upgrade (not sure as to the size yet however)
intercooler (front mount if it won't give me a problem with overheating)
intake (with cold air induction, if they make them for the single turbo's)
upgraded radiator
full exhaust
fuel management (was gonna get a dsmlink for the eclipse, don't have a clue as to what's best for these cars)
pulley set
larger injectors
fuel pump
adjustable fpr
built engine (what in the heck would be best i dunno....yet)
lightened flywheel with act clutch and pressure plate
profec b with remote switch

and i guess that's really about it. did i leave anything important out? no cams to worry about, no aftermarket intake manifold to worry about, no cam gears, no throttle body swap, not a lot of things that i'd need like on a piston engine.....

as for gauges though, i plan on sticking with the boost, egt, fuel pressure, and jumptronix a/f gauge unless someone can tell me as to why any of them wouldn't be needed. did i pretty much cover everything? just don't know which is gonna be best for my needs yet though, but trying to research it. just thought i'd give ya'll some sort of ideas as to my mod list in the future.

For the engine, check out www.pineappleracing.com

Rob, the guy who builds the motors, has been in the business for a while, and is well respected/knows what he is doing.

Is the jumptronix a/f guage one of the ones that has a LED readout? Those are basically worthless for real precision tuning that you need with your seven. The optimal set up would be an FJO wideband and a datalogit.

Are you going to tune the car yourself? If so, I would go with a PFC for its ease of instillation, and ability to run everything the stock ECU does. If not, talk with your tuner and find out what he/she is most comfortable with.

With the I/C, if you only plan on drag racing, and NO track events, go with the FMIC. If you plan on doing ANY roadracing go with a SMIC. Lastly, if you have $$$ to blow on the optimal combination of the two, go with a V-mount setup like most of the high-end jap tuners are now.

Turbo: the t-78 seems to be the tried and true setup around here; massive potential and some lag. The GT3540 is the new kid on the block, its advantage is very little lag, and decent top end. PM ernieT if you want to know about the Innovative turbo setup, he recently broke into the 10's.

Hope this helps,
kyle

yep, the jumptronix is a digital readout. not the blipy light crap. but i guess i'd have to get a wideband.
as for tuning the car and ALL mods, i'll do everything myself. i don't like ANYONE touching my cars. unless it's a good friend of mine or someone that i can trust real well.....okay, only my friends then. but overall, yeah, i'll be doing all my own tuning. would prefer something with a laptop, and able to use some datalogging capabilities. don't really plan on any roadcourse stuff. just drag and around town if anything. no roadcourse around me as it is anyway. what's the V-mount setup? i've never heard of it. as for the turbo, click on my link near the top. is the turbo you're talking about (GT3540) about the same size? that turbo i currently own is a dual bb turbo with a GT35 wheel but i know it won't mount up the same so gonna sell it i suppose. but wondering if the turbo you're talking about is near the same as mine other than the difference in mounting. mine supports 630+ horsepower.

one other thing about the front mount i/c....
if i live in florida (hot climate), even though i'd have an upgraded radiator, do ya'll think overheating would still not be a problem? around town and drag race is all i really plan on remember.

and what about oil coolers? anyone using aftermarket one's? what's the thought about it? thanks!

Ray Wilson from PFS has over 600 HP and i have seen his on the street in manassas occasionally though it has been a while. But i would imagine it to be a pain in the *** to drive so slow all the time.
