There should be a spade connection on it for the stock connector. Does yours not have this?

No i do not have a spade connector, i purchased this unit from advanced auto and it just has a little nub..

How does this sender work, can i just wrap a wire around it and heat shrink it or is there more involved?

It doesn't appear you got the appropriate stock sender. I would take it back. If they can't get the right one, order one from Ray at Malloy Mazda.
