Here are some pics ... I'll start with the ports. I won't show the exhaust ports as I couldn't see any difference from the original ones ... in terms of porting.

Here's the motor and the gasket set before any build up:

I lied a bit about the exhaust port pics ... here's my best attempt at a pic of a ceramic apex seal. My camera is auto focus so it tends to focus on the outside of the ports rather than the inside ... damn!

OK ... last one here's as far as I've made it during the build up. It turns out that my oil injectors are bad. From what the shop manual says, they're supposed to pass air in but not out. One (of mine) passes air in and out and the other out but not in. Soooo ... I can't continue the build up until Wednesdayish. I should have the injectors by them.

I have to say ... the build up (so far) hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be. By comparison, I was very intimidated when I started ... just some encouragement for everyone out there that is thinking about doing their own rebuild.

Hey Nameless ... what are you up to next weekend? I'm gona need a hand putting the motor back in.

FYI you didnt rebuild it. Pineapple did.
You pulled out the enigne and took off the assessories.
Nothing particularly difficult there.
Where are the mods man? You keeping the air pump ,P/S, A/C
You got anything new and exciting or just an engine swap?
BTW Motors are electrical, You mean to say Engine.

For some people removing an engine is pushing the limit of their mechanical expertise (ppl like me). Why does it seem like your out to bash what James, and Pineapple have done. No one gives a **** about motors vs engines definition - IF he wants to say motor BIG WHOOP.
I know you've got plenty of knowledge regarding our cars and I've always admired your informative contributions, but this nitpicking is just so lame.

Damn man, why so harsh?

Do you really think the ports don't look too great? Any other opinions? I had Pineapple at the top of my list for a rebuild.

BTW...I am grateful that James has taken the time to keep us updated with his write up, pics, as well as links to other resources that have helped him out. I'm sure it will help others. I don't want to tow a car to some shop and have them do all the work when I can save a ton of money doing some of it myself. I kinda wanna do some work on it myself anyways. Seeing this post I am pretty confident I could do it now where as before there were doubts. I'd rather see a post about ripping out an engine, then another post about some joe blow showing a write up on how he painted his brake calipers and replaced his shift ****.

Those pictures don't do the porting any justice. I've seen hunderds, if not thousands of ports Rob has ported over the years.

Keep in mind that some of the stuff in the ports may be crisco, or vasoline.

Ah lighten up Nameless. No one is allowed to have fun?
No sense of humor here.
The intake runners looked sloppy IMO. I figured Pineapple work would be very exact. Appertently not all the time.
It wont affect performance at all. There is just something to be said about putting your all into your work.
I odnt mean to bust James, He has dopne a nice thing to document and write this all up. I was just being a smartass. Most guys would laugh. Sorry.

^ you sounded like it but forgot the winking smilie

I can build a pc from scap parts upside down & and blindfolded, but before my FD my mechanical knowlege was limited to changing the spark plugs. Changing the fuel filter made me feel like a user call the help desk or Jerry Lewis. D'oh!

Nice write up James, and btw I like IIS. "lol"

What's up with the pressure plate? Just repainted stock, or is it aftermarket? And what about the clutch?

Good job with the engine pull posts. Very informative.

Wink Humor and small mods

OK Fd3BOOST, I had to read your posts a second time to see the humor. I have to say, it's a bit dry without vocal inflection. Anyway, here's a smiley for you. <lol>

ACT (40% over stock) pressure plate. Hmm, after talking with a few people, I wish that I had bought a stock setup to replace the original. I don't plan on pushing more that 300RWH (my personal goal HP) and believe that the stock plate would have done fine. That is, for less money as well as less wear on the clutch hydraulics.

Clutch is stock material. I think that it's the same part number (as stock) for that matter.

The aluminum flywheel in from Rx7Store.net.

Here are the mods. Click the picks to go to the manufacturer's respective WWW sites.

I found the first mod on ILuvmyRx7.com. I have to say Fd3BOOST, it was hard to install. I'm not sure how, but I managed.

I'm hoping that the second mod will extend my oil changes out to 6000-9000 or more miles. With the cost of synthetic, this should save some $. The filter comes with an oil test kit. Basically, OilGaurd analyses (you mail it to them) your oil. The idea it that you can see how long OilGaurd's filter extends the oil's life and thus how long your oil changes can safely be extended. It's all on their WWW site as well as others on the Net. Do a search for "oil bypass filter".

Here's a pic of the tee that delivers oil to the filter. If you look at my earlier pics the return hole (courtesy of Pineapple) is visible along with the associated hose.

Next ... the installation ...

James

The ACT clutch is fine. Don't worry, it won't cause you any trouble.

Put up or shut up right?
Ok so this is my porting work. I think mine look cleaner on the edges than the to ones they did on your engine. You be the judge.

Not to butt in... but.

I've been pulling my engine apart to swap the parts into the rebuilt reman ala Pineapple. I had the same little oil spigot on mine from the previous owner. I had of course drained the oil while the engine was in the car. When I pulled the oil spigot thing, a full 1/2 quart of oil ended up on my garage floor. I'd be curious: Fd3 have you ever pulled the spigot off to see if all your oil is draining? I'm not so sure this little time saver is doing the job...

Q. Does my Engine Oil Drain Valve protrude into the interior of the oil pan and prevent full drainage of my engine oil?
A. No. The threaded oil drain plug hole is always reinforced to accept the threaded bolt of the drain plug. In most cases, the Engine Oil Drain Valve will not extend past this threaded portion of the drain hole and will allow the oil to be properly drained. Your Engine Oil Drain Valve will let you drain your engine oil while it is hot with out burning your hands and it is much more efective than trying to pump the oil out from above

Ports-> I don't think James's pic's were as sharp and clear as FD3booost's were. Maybe that's the reason for the ports not looking as nice?

James did you figure out where to mount the 2nd oil filter?

To clarify what specifically I was talking about..

Like I said it will not make any difference on the engines performance. Not anything that you will notice anyway, It just looks sloopy. Thats all.

Don't sweat the remarks, I'll just find one of your threads and have some fun.

I ordered the valve from Fumoto, off of the web. Probably not the most cost effective.

Ya know, I think that my bad photography is half of the reason that my ports look so bad and the other half is the porting. Oh well, we may never know ... at least not until I pull the car apart for the next rebuild.

Here's my current work:

After experiencing the joy of mating the trans. to the motor as well as installing the down-pipe (while the motor is in the engine bay) I'm fairly sure that I'm going to pull the tranny with the motor next time.

Thanks to Nameless' suggestion, I managed to install the tranny without too much frustration. I bought two 10mm x 1.25 x 70mm bolts from Home Depo. These bolts were then used to pull the tranny close enough to the motor so that I could install the stock bolts.

The DP was another story. I would suggest that anyone attempting this (with the motor in the car) have a wide assortment of tool available. I.E. different shapes and sizes.

Later all,

James

P.S. I'll let everyone know how the first startup goes as well as document some of Rob's suggested break-in tips.

Oh, and GoRacer, I haven't started looking for a mounting spot for the Bypass Filter yet. I figure that I'll look after everything has been installed into the engine bay. I'm hoping for a location that's easy to reach ... for future filter changes.

Sorry, James, but I gotta ask a dumb question: what's the easiest method to drop the tranny without damaging anything, using the car on ramps like you have?

The tranny is a bit long ... Hmm ... I just assumed that the ramps would provide enough clearance. I haven't actualy looked at the issue in detail.

Maybe some of the more experienced people out there can help.

^ Yeah nameless, where were you? You missed out! We had beer, bbq and naked cheerleaders with pom poms

You're welcome James. I felt like I was Jerry Lewis at first but now I only feel like Homer Simpson and with a little more practice I could be like the guy on tool time.

I'd like to find out how much of a heat difference your coated DP and exhause manifold will be. Too bad we don't have some kind of temperature gun thing.
