Pics of my turbo setup

I mentioned I was going to post some pics for the guy trying to build a twin system and I finally got around to it. I pulled the motor yesterday to install EGT's for each header and to tighten turbo parts since I've got some pretty substantial exhaust leaks (something that happens when you can't reach a bolt with anything short of a 2 inch long wrench . Well now that I've pulled it out I decided to resolve my heat issues by simply getting the turbo exhaust housings and all the tubing HPC coated to save harnesses, fuel lines and oil lines all running close by. Needless to say considering the date and the expected turn around time from HPC the car is down for the winter. Oh well I got to drive it 5 times for about 30 miles, that's more than the last 6 years combined heh. Grrr let me play with the edit tool. http://www.winternet.com/~aspi/

Just go to that link for a bunch of pics, sorry no time to learn the interface.

Kevin T. Wyum

Pics 19 through 28 in the root directory are the turbos in the car. Pics 29 and up are outside of the car with various parts pulled off to see better where things go. The other directories are old pics etc.

Those pics are just Crazy Kevin. I grew up just outside of Minneapolis in Buffalo, MN but moved to Phoenix in 1987. Seeing your pics makes me wish we lived closer. Sure would be great to stop over and see it personally. Hey, I'm only a few miles from HPC. Had my DP coated with their EXTREME (2500F) coating, and I love it. Thinking of having my turbo housings coated as well next time I have to rebuild. For now though, the car is running great so hopefully it will be awhile. If I can assist with your HPC order from this end just let me know. I'm pretty sure that all parts are received here in Phoenix, but the 2500F Extreme coating is applied at a plant somewhere in Oklahoma. Again, thanks for sharing the pics and let me know if I can assist!

Wow. Very cool. Can't wait to see when you get it back in the car how you like the setup.

Damn that thing looks like something out of the Matrix with all that braided line. You must have $500 in Earl fittings on there.

Realy tho it looks good. That is some set up you have there, what size turbos are those. And how much boost do plan to run.

The turbos are ball bearing To4E 60-1 compressors with T3 stage 5 exhaust sides, obviously wet center sections. Intent is to run approximately 24psi. The headlights are my own setup I used to make as a kit for a very short time.

I had to come in and watch the kids so I didn't finish taking the turbos off for more pictures of the inner layers. I'll post more later when I do.

Not to shabby. Do you have any numbers on that kind of setup?

Kevin is there no way to simplify all of that? Really needed coolant in the turbos? Whats the deal with that huge intake? Does that intake tube pass through the intercooler duct? Is that large pipe blocking a nice part of your intercooler from getting air or do you think the air just goes around it?

when are the turbos spooled? They are a lot bigger than the T25s brocken93 is using. Ball bearing and a lot more $$ too.

This was never intended to be a kit or anything. It was for my personal car so the objective was to do it as well as it could be done. I used a wet turbo because I didn't want the oil taking the entire thermal load from the turbos. Don't all the single kits use wet turbos? I can just imagine the customer support issues with something like this as a kit (heh).

The spool time is really up to you. With a tight AR exhaust housing like .45 I was hitting 20 psi by 4000-4500 rpm. I went to larger housings this time but I really didn't get any solid testing in because of my doubts with no EGT readings. Also keep in mind Trev and I made this 6 years ago which makes it a bit more impressive to me. It's too bad I tried to be cheap in using the OEM compressor bypass x2.

The general rule is that two smaller turbos will always spool faster than a large single that delivers the same volume of air. I have no clue what size single you'd need to equal two T04E's. I'll take the other pics with turbo's removed later tonight or tomorrow.

Sorry, RE: The intake.

Yeah it does pass through the duct in the large area after the neck down. I'm sure it has a minor impact on flow through the core but I'm guessing the unrestricted cold air source to that turbo will overcome it. Each turbo has its own 9"L x 6"dia K&N filter, one under each headlight delivered by those 3" tubes.

I agree with using a wet turbo setup; the oil in a rotary already has a LOT of thermal load to deal with.

Not to veer the thread off to the headlights, but are those 90mm Hellas you're using, Kevin? It appears that you're using two projector units? Or are you using a projector for low beam, and the H9 for high beam?

Neat pictures. The shot of your car in One Lap brings back many memories of my first few years with the FD.

Did Tan's car have both turbos teed into one intake under the pas side light?
Have you considered triming down your manifold exhaust flange/'plate? Might be a good winter project, but you will probably have to re-corner balance afterwards =D

very nice and different... good call on the wet center, if you're lapping it then to me, just being oil cooled is a nono.

also, do you have more photos of the intercooler setup? did i see a shroud?

Headlights are just plain old PIAA 910's 55w low beams and 110w highs. Not the best visability but I don't drive fast on dark country roads in this car : ) I'm sure there's a better light I could bolt on now days.

For Kevin Tan's we did T both inputs to one tube under the passenger side headlight. He was running on stock non sequentials so he didn't need massive amounts of air.

The IC is my normal Large IC except the passenger side end tank has two 2" inputs instead of one 2 3/4"

Target number is about 630hp. It's likely capable of much more but drivetrain components are already expected to break at this level and this car is to remain a street car, hence routing the wastegates back into the exhaust to quiet things down etc. etc.

Lucky for you that Minnesota doesn't have emissions stations yet. That would never fly in a "street" setup here in Arizona.

Minnesota had forced emissions testing for years during the 90's and dumped it because it showed no benefit to air quality if I remember correctly, the reason they shut them all down. It was either that or the air quality improved past the point where testing was needed for the metropolitan area.

Either way, it's still lucky for you and other motorsports enthusiasts up there. In many respects I'm happy that I can drive my car year-round down here, but with summertime temps above 100 for nearly 4 months, it's like having a "winter" season here as well. Can't really push the cars too hard in that kind of heat! But anyway I digress.... let's get back on topic!!

How long did it take for you to get those back? Looks great Kevin, look forward to seeing some new numbers and times for the beast. It's long overdue.
