seems to be tension toward new buyers...

if you like the car, can get the car for a good price, willing to drive on the passenger side, get it registered and insured in your state for lawful operation on both state roads and federal highways*, then go ahead. however, your might run into federal jurisdiction on interstate highways.

And that has to be the dumbest thing i ever heard, besides misshifting in an automatic....you must really suck at driving or something...personally i've never mis-shifted in any LHD or RHD car, and i don't think anyone who could drive worth a damn would ever misshift.

Dom:

the whole study hall reference came from a post on the 1st or second page...someone said i would be the coolest kid in study hall with rhd but iwouldn't be fooling anyone. so i said i was ALREADY the coolest kid in study hall.

it's called sarcasim...and it's used alot on forums. there is no reason to be so angry...

and to quote fatchicksinpartyhats.com

"WHY SO MAD FATTYS! YOU HAVE A HAT! ENJOY THE CHILI!!!!"

(i'm not saying anyone's fat here...just a funny line.)

I really dont know what a lot of these guys are talking about i live in cali. (the worst smog state). And i know dozens of people who are driveing smog legal, rhd, jdm imported cars. It jast takes a little time and money and work. I have pesonaly help my best friend smog a 99 civic hatch back. Rhd drive and all. now you might be saying how did you do that, Easy we put a 99 cali civic engine and smog equipment in it. it was jdm on the out side but good old california smog friendly on the inside. oh yeah we had to swap the windshield to. the jdm on wasnt dot aproved. We took it to the ref with the bill of sell and all the paper work that came with it and about a hour later it was registerd. My wife is a insurance agent at farmers insurance. And as long as any car is register it is considered to be legal to insure. And the best thing is we insured it as a 99 civic, not a custom car. I live in nor-cal and we dont really have the big city crack downs. but no one has ever been pulled over in their rhd cars, for them being rhd cars. I have personaly owend 2 rhd vw bettles. the old ones. a 57 and a 60. I drove them every were. and never was hasseld. Good luck with your car. I just thought I would try to give you a few positive posts. And if this doesnt help you can always call motorex. they help people register jdm cars every day. And they are in california.

There is a guy that lives 3 house's up from me and he has 4 RHD Mini's the old school ones. He has no problem registering them, and i live in CA. I happen to like the RHD, the 1 R33 i got to drive was awsome, except for ordring food at Taco Bell. Shift patter and peddles are in the same spot but you're on the other side of the car. Anyways good luck dude, I would buy it to.

there is a guy in town that sells the old mini's. he has a lot with like 20 or 30 of them.

http://www.turkys.com/mini.html

he wants to much for them...i think i would give him 5k for one...but no more. i would have to swap a b series motor into it. someone already makes a mount kit for it. a wankel would prolly fit better though.

there is shop in SC that makes the whole swap kit for a b series in a mini...that thing would fly with close to 200hp. and there are a ton of people driving around in these minis...i forgot they where rhd.

Keep in mind that these cars aren't on the same OBD standard that our federal government has been using for years.

The problem is not with getting it registered as a custom car the problem is the inspection getting it registered is easy. You have to have DOT glass, speedo in mph not kph(yes they look at that) gas filler tube, head and tail lights, seat belts, tires and thats just out side the car then they look at the engine. So your buddy that got the R33 pulled some s**t to get that car registered. Oh yeah just because it has a VIN and is registered doesnt mean its legal to drive on the street. Just in case you think I am full of it I have tried this in Arizona and New Mexico to get a S14 and a R32 registered and both where kicked back and I have been pulled over in the R32 most of the time its so the cop can look at the car and ask questions.

Arizona and new mexico aren't South Carolina as it turns out. but thanks for the heads up on what they inspect. i can prolly switch to a US-Spec speedo. And the other stuff can be worked through. if there is something specific on the car that needs to be changed, then i'll get it off a US spec FD.

This is the first post I have read from beginning to end that was 4 pages or longer. Usually I am too lazy but i found this interesting. Someone already mentioned it, Theres Federal smog laws and then state smog laws. The rule for states is as folows: At a minimum, comply federal standards. This allows the state to raise their standards over federal standards (IE Cali Laws)... But, each state is different and yes I have seen JDM cars here in Los Angeles. My friends friend owns a DC3? RHD Integra. Daily Driven, not sure if he still has it or not.

Yeah dude there is a lot more, they look at the front and rear bumpers to see if they are in spec with fed crash laws then they look at the engine. If the engine has the egr and smog gear on it they look at the cats. Dude I am not trying to tell you not to do it but you going to start pushing 20 to 30k just to get the car to pass inspection. Oh yeah dont for get about the airbags they look at those too but I hope you can do it.
Look if you really want a JDM RHD 7 what you need to do is find a RI and have him bring the car in two or more pieces like take out the engine and seats and rear end and bring the car and parts into the states then sell the engine and windsheld. Put the car back together find a 93-95 spec engine, windsheld, seat belts, bumpers and fuel filler neck at that point you may be able to slip the car by the state.
What it comes down to is money and how much you want to spend. After that you will have to insure the car as a gray market car so its going to be 2-3 times more than normal. Your better off buying a 7 in the states but hey if its what you want then do it. If you have more questions about getting the car to pass inspection pm me I can give you more of a list on what they look at. I think I still have the NHTSB list that I got from the gov.

I don't see why everyone's got their panties in a bunch. As far as I know and am concerned, if I get a car titled, registered, and insured, I have my registration card which is valid, I have tags on my car which are valid, and I have an inspection sticker on the windshield (if your state has inspection), then end of story. YOU ARE LEGAL, any way you cut it. Legal does NOT mean correct. Legal simply means you've satisfied the requirements in ANY given manner. Being that you have all of the above, you ARE legal, UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE. And trust me, anyone will be HARD PRESSED to try and prove otherwise. In fact...

...you just proved my point. The cop pulled you over, harrassed you, asked questions etc, and then what? HE LET YOU GO. Because when he has tags, title, and registration, he can't say anything. Now if you live in my state, they may very well pull you over to do a roadside inspection. RHD in itself is NOT illegal, so you could pass in that. It's only illegal if a LHD COUNTERPART exists. So say, a RHD Skyline is 100% legal. Speedo, they may or may not catch it. Cats, seatbelts, and turn signals is all they're gonna be able to look for. No one's gonna pull off the doors looking for reinforcements, or check for an OBD II port. Getting the car registered is the key, plain and simple. I'd do it in a heartbeat, knowing full well the po-po can harrass, but can't touch.

Insurance is real simple too. You give 'em a VIN, they're good to go. They won't know the info about the car, but they'll insure it according to standard comparable cars.

As far as importation papers...wtf? Where are your importation papers for YOUR US FD? No one's required to keep paperwork like that, other than the importer, and that's simply for a short time period. If I'm buying a used car, that's been sold and resold, I don't have any responsibility to prove my innocence! I'm innocent UNTIL proven guilty. Translation: the car is LEGAL and was imported and converted legally UNTIL proven otherwise. You're telling me the guys who own Skylines have to drive around w/ their original importation papers (who only God knows if they're even ever given a copy of in the first place!)? OF COURSE NOT. Again, anyone would be hard pressed to prove the car as otherwise (ie illegal) if it has all the necessary state paperwork...

EDIT: I will admit, however, I'd be kinda scared to find out what a Fed or Customs Agent may be able to do if he saw you in a RHD FD, and he for SURE knows that it's not legal because a) it has a LHD counterpart in the US, and b) the JDM ones were never legalized here...

Just want to reiterate this since some people aren't paying too much attention to things. Please keep in mind, each state has different laws. Other's, like California, are much more strict than say... North Dakota.

leave the poor guy alone if he says he could do it we will give him the benefit of the doubt as long as he keeps us posted. I say it is worth it but leave it as an auto. If i was you i would leave the car the way it is seeing how its such a rare find. Leave it as an RHD leave it as an automatic and leave it bone stock.

First off, take a damn english lesson.

Another thing, you won't ever have a JDM RX7, and not because you can't find them around there, but because you are too ******* lazy, or cheap to look where they are actually for sale. i cant find rhd rx7's for sale in maryland, help me!

I mean, do you expect to find a rhd rx7 in the same city you live in or what? Unless your in L.A there is not much of a chance of that. Get real and face the facts that you could get one if you REALLY wanted, which you obviously don't!!! There are some for sale on this very site even!!! And two other places i could tell you about, but if i did, i'd just be wasting my time, because your not going to buy one.

WOW! i stopped reading this bullshit like 1/4 of the way through, i couldn't take it anymore...Even if any of that **** you're saying is correct it does not apply to him. DO YOU LIVE IN SC? No, you live in Phoenix AZ, so just shut the **** up, nobody cares what you're saying. you've probably owned ZERO rhd cars and go by what your ricer friends tell you.
OH, FL, SC, VA, WA are some of the easiest states to resister grey market cars, why the **** do you think they're are so many in these states?
