see how that works...SC state says it's LEGAL...then it's not ILLEGAL...
Just to correct you, your state has a "Department of Motor Vehicles", not to be confused w/ the federal govt's "Department of Transportation".

Your state DMV and the federal DOT operate independently. Just because the local DMV genius tells you that you are legal, doesn't mean that you are.

Just as a note, 4038 is an application for a Rebuilt or Homemade Vehicle.
401-A is for a serial number.

Is this vehicle homemade? No.
Is it a rebuilt one (from an authorized importer)? No.

Where is your US Customs paperwork?

anyway...i never meant to argue about this with any of you...just asking if it was worth it to get an automatic, and as it turns out people are saying that the manual swap isn't so hard. So i'll call up the dmv and have em send someone out to take a look at the car and get it regestered.

i'm really sorry you guys are so bitter about this topic. i'll tell ya what....when i get it regestered i'll post my tags on here to prove it. And i'm sure that there will be federal agents swarming around my car trying to get it crushed or siezed.

just cause you haven't done it yourself doesn't mean it can't be done. and i would suspect that living in califoria would make it totally impossible due to emmisions and other dot standards....but i'm in south carolina...most anything can be done in sc. I have friends with regestered skylines in sc...insured. it's not really as big a deal as you make it out to be.

you just have to apply yourself instead of bitching about what you can't do on a forum.

thanks for the info.
Smarter than us? I've already pointed out some of your errors, but I'm in a good mood today. I've been mean before...

We're not bitter about this at all...but not willing to have the govt. impound the car and impose a fine.

Post your tags. While you're at it, post your license plate, address, and basic contact info. Also, provide US Customs paperwork to show that the car was legally imported into the US and not stolen.

Again...since you're so smart...emissions is a federal standard.

hey guys...maybe i didn't make myself clear...i'm not trying to be a kak about this. I'm simply buying a car and registering it.

and i have searched this topic....and the only thing i've found out to be true is that Fumanchu is all over this Dom guys kak. your obsesive lust for Dom has little or nothing to do with me...but i'm happy you can show your love so openly.

anyway...if i really thought you guys where trying to help me in this situation i would take your advice more realistically. all you are really doing is flaming me just to do it.

i'm sorry for not making the destinction between DOT and DMV. that was my typo and thanks for pointing it out.

i'm not covered under any family plan...so they aren't in any danger...thanks for looking out.

this thread is alittle past where i thought it was gonna go. i'm not in anyway trying to pick a fight...other than the reference to fumancho and where his head ends and Dom *** starts...but thats harmless.

thanks for the advice from the people that where constructive...there is no reason to get all bent out of shape over someone else's car though. You guys don't think it is possible, and thats fine...but there is no nead to get pissy about it.

also...i am already the coolest kid in my study hall. i don't need rhd to prove that. it's something fun to mess with, just like any other car. they are all just toys that you play with for a while and then sell to get a new toy. i don't see why you guys are so upset about this...it's like i slept with your mom or something. i live in a state where i can do something like this...it's been done...i have a friend that i ride with on the weekends, he has a rhd porsche thats all legal. i have other friends with R32 GTS-Ts and R33 Gts-ts that have registration and tags and insurance. so i KNOW FOR A FACT it is possible. none of them are going to jail or getting black listed from any insurance companies. and the car isn't costing me any more than a normal one would. the guy will trade straight up for my Lexus SC300.

again...i never started a fight, i only posed a question or 2.

and the definition of a home made car is what you make it. i could dismantle the entire car and put it back together....home made. i get a bill of sale on the chassis and the engine, or whatever else is included in the car. lighten up

have some fun

it;s all good.

come to SC and take a look at the federal emissions standards.....these things don't exist here. i'm sure the law exists, but i don't think anyone here cares about that very much....as in the dmv...or police...or anyone at all ever

Its funny how all these people get mad and start yelling, oh no thats illegial, or that won't work, federal law says this...federal law say that...or, oh that would never work in cali...

the best reason for buying jdm 7's is the price...you get them for a hell of alot cheaper than most any FD3S you can find here in the states..

the black FD you're about to buy...is it for sale at a shop in Paterson? if so, i know the one your talking about and i've seen it in person.
anyway good luck with your future project

This dude asked a fairly simple question about how easy it was to do an auto-manual swap, and if it was worth the effort.

Barely anyone has posted any good advice.

Maybe a simple "IMO it's not worth the effort of the legality issues" would have sufficed, along with some useful advice on how easy/difficult your experince was with a tranny swap.

EDIT: I would post some info on tranny swaps, but I've never done one, so can't help sorry.

You guys are pitifull people who need to worry about something other than getting in fights on an internet forum, lemmie tell you, If South Carolina allows him to drive the car around South Carolina, then it really doesn't matter if it's illegal to the federal government, Last time I checked the FBI and Department of Transportation didn't drive around and pull people over for **** like which side of the car you drive.

I know a guy who got a car with RHD, got it legal in Delaware, and Illegal or not, has been driving the car daily for seven years, so you tell me if it even matters as long as the state you got the car registered in says it's ok.

My advice, buy the car, make it legal in South Carolina's eyes, do the tranny swap, and tint the windows if you leave SC.

i dont care if its legal or not
just make sure you dont get yourself into major ****
if you can get it running and legal..thats cool..you have a registered rhd fd
but if you get into some accident and insruance wont cover it...just make sure you dont regret what you did

Exactly, I believe that it can be done. People get through loop holes all of the time. But it's just not worth losing your car or having your insurance deny a claim in the future if something happens. Just not worth it especially in a car that can be bought in the US with no problems. Even more since the car has NO positives what-so-ever compared to the USDM model. A Skyline is a different story.

But whatever it takes to be JDM I guess.

Thanks for your replies as to Fumanchu and myself. Boy...that was the most enlightening bs I've ever heard. We're trying to tell you why something is wrong/illegal...and you're trying to talk about Fumanchu and me. You're brilliant.

And congrats on being the coolest kid in study hall. I guess if it mattered to be cool in "study hall", I guess I would've given a rat's a$$. Consider this an amazing accomplishment on your part. I have no idea why you mentioned this.

No one started a fight. We mentioned a potential problem/issue. You claim otherwise.

A home made car is not one that is disassembled and reassembled together. A home made car consists of "x" % of original/custom parts, or parts from another vehicle. If your home made car is this RX-7, you've got a home made car right where you keep your box of Legos.

You may be able to start your own fan club...given some of the responses in this thread (coolvette who also happens to live in SC). After all...you think:

1) jdm is cool.
2) You're the coolest kid in your study hall.

Congrats. Keep your talking...I'm finding this thread to be much more entertaining and fun now.

just my2 cents from mississippi, emissions practically does not exsist here, i am a gm mechanic with a state certification to perform inspections, our inspections are for safety only, and there are a few rhd's around, my cousin owns a allstate insurance branch, and he says there would be no problem insuring the car<plus most insurance places here take pics of your car before insuring> he says a vin and required safety features are all they require. Now I do realize the federal emissions laws, but there is also California emissions laws that are more strict, and it is a difference in the 2, but I mean you have a million loud *** z71's running around in the south with no cats and most of the time no mufflers. As for the kit car idea, i agree that probably wont work, but I do think you guys are being overly harsh on this guy, saying it cant be done, thats bs! There are loop holes in registering and insuring, if he finds a way good for him.

That's what it comes down to - doing it completely legally, or doing it in a way that gets your papers signed. I agree that in SC it's probably possible to get it all registered and insured and stuff, once you get it thru customs. But if anyone reviews it carefully it's game over.

It cracks me up the energy that goes into these posts by people when we all (short of ObjectZero) konw that this won't pan out, and that the guy will just fade away from the boards like every other kid that comes in here all "OMG I want an FD so I can put NAWZ on it!" or "I need an RX-7 because my buddies honda beat my neon!"

To this guy's credit, my buddy Jason imported and registered an r33 in South Carolina without Motorex's help or anyone else for that matter. He did the same process, registered it as a custom car. He's had it registered for almost 3 years now and nothing more than the occasional harassment from a confused officer.

That state just seems to be pretty damn lax.

Anyway, keep us posted and let us know if you succeed in getting this FD registered.
