I have no idea what one looks like. I read the post about the only getting 187 mpg on a full tank. I'm getting less then that. More like 120 until I hit 1/4 tank mark. I don't see any visable leaks in the engine bay or any underneath the car. I do have the gas smell at start up in the morning.

Its not the damper affecting your fuel economy. That would be a HUGE leak. I don't have a pic on hand, but it is kinda mushroom shaped and is on the back of the primary fuel rail. You can't really see it without pulling the upper intake manifold off and moving some stuff out of the way.

do not drive this car!! do take anyone's word for it that its NOT the FPD. If its never been changed then its a liability. Read the other threads on this (including my own disasterous one) and handle your business ASAP

you may want to search on this site http://www.banzairacing.net/
you will then need to click on how to mods then choose the FD pulsation damper elimination. I have not performed this mod but do know a few people who have and recommend it. Good luck although if you decide to replace it of for that matter modify be ready to spend some time at it. You have to remove the intake manifold, the rats nest, coils, ruel rack, electonic air pump and all the other crap around it. If you do that you might as well replace the vac. lines upgrade to an FC thermoswitch, thermostat, belts, etc. LOTS OF WORK. Not sure if this will increase you mpg.

It's the green saucer-shaped thing attached to the primary injectors housing. The old ones are black.

I forgot to mention that im city driving about 3 miles to work with 3 stop lights. All I do is drive to work and back and occasionally drive 15 miles once or twice a week. The thing is I don't see any leaks in the engine bay or underneath. Never have. No puddles of fluid or anything in the driveway.I do smell gas at start up. What could cause me to get such poor gas mileage. I think when I first got it, I got 160 miles until I hit the 1/4 tank mark which is still quite low, but now it's like 120 miles. Is this definitly a leak or can something else cause this. This car is my only mode of transportation but I don't want to be driving it if it has potential to catch fire.

Then don't drive it. Even if you have to buy a $1000 beater and sell it next week for the same price, it's better than dealing with an engine fire. 3 miles is close enough that you should be able to scrub up some options for getting to/from work.

You won't see these puddles - the pocket between the engine block and LIM is not easily visible with the UIM and rats nest in place.

I didn't notice you said you smelled gas. What I meant was that a leaking damper will not effect fuel economy that much.

Well wouldnt not be able to see a puddle of gas if you were leaking unless it was a line that was just busted open. You ever drop gas on the ground and see it dissapear a few seconds later. The only thing you could do is smell it. Or feel it. stick ur hand around there and see if it gets wet at all.

Why dont you try all the basic **** like changing o2 sensor, spark plugs, fuel filter, etc.



So glad i went single. I could get under my manifold to the injectors in under 8 minutes, with my friends help, we timed it. haha.

How strong is the smell? Where does it seem like it's coming from? Under the car center? Rear or engine bay?

Do you notice the smell any other time beside startup?


Your short trips are probably mostly (maybe not completely) what's killing your gas mileage.

i was reading on the board and one of the members mention bad mpg. i guess he changed the injectors and fuel filter.. that helped... so try New plugs, wires filter and all that.. should help.

one more thing . TO: PHATMAN , hows the maint. on a single turbo?? same as a Twin. or more work to deal with... like tunning and all that?? . do you keep constantly tunning or no??

Dude, don't be in denial about fuel leaks. There's never any normal circumstance where you should be smelling fuel, unless you're standing behind an idling FD that's running rich.
Stick something long thin and flexible(like a straw) down behind the UIM and work it on down into the recess that is next to the FPD(study the pic Jonski put up), pullit back out and see if its wet (just like an oil dipstick). I'd recommend taking off the UIM, but however much diligence and maintenance you put into your FD you'll save greater headaches and $$ later.

While you have the straw in there, you can blow INTO it and see if that stirs up any fuel odor.

dude its sooooooooooo much easier to work on, its insane. I havent gotten it tuned yet im just running off stock maps, so ive been keeping the revs at 4,500. Everything is easily accesible. Turbos, IC piping, anything under the manifold. any vacuum line (theres only like 10 so its easy to know if ones off cause they are all easy to get to. any electrical connector (except crank angle sensor and the ignition coils, but it takes me no time to take off the manifold so i could get to those fairly easy too. I could find a leak and fix it no problem. I could even stick my hand full on under the manifold straight to the firewall. If i had like 2 redbulls i could seriously pull out the engine in 2 hours now. The only pain in the *** thing to get to is the oil filter, but thats always been. even then, its not that hard, unless its on there supertight.

There are many more things on this car which can (if failing) cause fuel odors that aren't actual "fuel leaks".

If he's getting a smell, he needs to diagnose the location of it's origin. Once that is determined, then you'll know the likely hood of an actual leak verses something else.

Plugs and wires changed about 8 months ago. Got the car with mods already on it. Intake and exhaust. In Morning start up I can smell it. When I turn on the heater I can smell it pretty good but when I popped the hood I couldn't really smell it. I always thought it came from the exhaust since I can smell it pretty good from there. I can definitley smell it when I turn on the heater in the morning but it goes away. When I turn it on after the cars been running for a while I don't smelll it at all.
