This is how it started.
I was driving it on some windy back roads hitting full boost then when i hit a straight away a 1 ton dodge pulled up on my *** really fast so I got back in it to pull away. you know having a little fun with the FD. Any ways as I was pulling away from the dodge I heard a faint pop then a ZZzzzzzzzzzz and I looked behind me only to find the truck gone in a smoke screen! so i pulled over got out and smoke was just billowing out of the exauhst. so i turned it off and a older really nice guy came out to try and help me he said it looked like a blown head gasket (which its not) and I just told him it was a rotary (no HEAD). so i called a freind to come pull me to his house about 2-3 blocks away. (He towed me with his integra lol) And I called up on of my freinds who owns a performace shop he came over and said it looked like the turbos had gone out but he doesnt know one thing about rotarys. The motor has 5k on it and the body has 80k the turbos were soposed to be rebuilt. we all know how well rebuilt fd turbos are. I have the paper work on them and they were rebuilt 01/2002 by majestic tubo in waco, texas. I also have all the paper work on the engine all the parts came from mazda trix the motor has all new seals and two piece two mm seals from them as well. So any ideas or is all that stuff i just typed not even mater?

How cold is "cold"? What was the outside/garage temperature when you started it? If the air temps were down below 40F, like Tom93R1 said, and there is no smell, then it's probably just condensation in the exhaust system. happens to ALL cars in the northern part of the country during the winter. I'm going to school in the UP of Michigan, and normal temperature right now is between -5 and +10F, and my minivan smokes for 15+ minutes from the cold weather

I don't think that is from condensation in the engine/exhaust system.
From what I know and have seen, on any car, is that for the typical "steam" to be generated on cold days, the engine actually has to run for a bit to heat up the exhaust to start vaporizing the moisture.
My 7 will smoke quite a bit in the current weather, but it needs to build up to it. It doesn't just spew a ton of smoke out the tail immediately after startup. It gradually increases for a couple minutes until there's coming quite a cloud out of the exhaust, and eventually fades away pretty quickly. Takes a few minutes for all that to occur.

Anyhow, I hope I'm wrong...
Good Luck.

When i covered the dodge (when it first started) it was about 90-95f. In my garage (on the movie) it was around 45-50f, it smoked just as bad when it was warm out and the motor was hot as it does when its cold out and the motor is cold.

Have you atleast driven the car around? If you did drive it, did you boost at all? If you boosted, did it smoke? How long does it smoke for, or how long does it take to stop smoking? Does the car overheat while you drive, idleling? There are still some unanswered questions that could helps us.

forget the condensation crap. It shouldn't smoke in the morning start, as much as other piston cars. My car did that with shot o-ring. Check if your coolant shoots out from the tank, or if you can hear the coolant getting sucked from inside the car (as you wot.)

Whats kinda makes me think that its the turbos is for one they were rebuilt two it was don by majestic and three I installed an Apex-i intake on the car and after I turned the car on and it went to idle down I heard a ZZZZzzzzzzzzzz noise like if you took a peice of plastic and stuck it in a fan and it was loud in my garage. almost sounded like compressor surge ( you know the sound of a turbo trying to spin backwards) then two weeks later boom. thats why i would like to know how to compresion test a roary and what it should test at.

Mine did something like this when the 1300cc secondary injectors from RC stuck open. It did it a few times but never when it was at the shop.

Here's an easy fix. Spend $60-75 for a compression test to see if it's your engine or something else like your turbos. It's definitely worth it and will save you time and money. BTW, my car kind of looked like that too....found out it was the engine. I'm still rebuilding it as we speak.

Good luck!

I have bad turbos as well, and it smokes like a f'ing steam lcomotive when left overnite... untill it reaches 180F or fully warm.... I took the intake pipes off to do my altenator a couple of months ago, and holy crap they were caked with oil.... and I have a new V-Mount so I could see the oil on the couplers.... nasty.... so I started saving for a single... should be here by end of the week

People said engine was poked even though it had been rebuilt 20k ago
Turned out to be turbo seals
Good luck

the FUN- that sounds like you have a blown secondary turbo rather than a bad engine, though it might be both as well.

FD3SR1- two guesses. First is that you have a shot primary and oil is getting through even at idle. The second is that you have an overpressurized crank and it is blowing oil through at startup. I would deffinatly have someone check it out.

My car does the same exact thing and my car recently (10k miles ago) had the motor rebuild by a shop in northern VA and the turbos sent to majestic turbos. Ill try to get video/pictures of it and post it here, im scared to start it up again after last time (horrible smoke like that and horrible sputtering) and I never get full boost on the secondary turbo, which when i sent it in again after it was rebuild they said it was running perfectly... i dont know, just my in no way expert observations.

damn man, that is alot of smoke..funny thing about your smoke is that its a trail, sorta like a one angle flow where as normal smoke in really cold weather kinda feathers out of the exhaust pipe and spreads itself in the air..your smoke is a trail which is not normal..

today i started my car after 4 days (last time saturday) and it smoked alot for a good 8 minutes, then it disappeared to nothing..(weather now is about 22 degrees with like 15 wind chill)

def compression check your car FIRST!!!!!

well looks like the second video hasnt made it just yet, I sent it to tt rex 7.
I showed some of the guys at one of the local performance shops around here and they all think it sounds like one of the turbine wheels is hitting the side of the housing. but whats weird is it only makes the noise when you let off of the gas.

ok ive got some videos of my car. It wasn't near as bad as last time but it still looks kind of bad. I need somewhere to host them. The quality isn't very good because I had to borrow my room mates digital camera and there is no sound so you cant hear the extremely rough idle.
