Pic: airpump filtered breather?
Does any body have this breather setup on their airpump?
I have an M2 large and I want to duplicate this guy's setup. I just have to find a breather like this first.

Since the airpump is, well, an air pump, it's like a small engine. Sucks air in, compresses it, and ducts it to the air control valve, which determines where it should go.
If you have dirty, unfiltered air, the air pump will fail prematurely. Imagine your engine sucking in dirt and sand - that would eat up the seals in the engine like sandpaper, making it lose compression. Same principle here.
Mazda actually has a TSB on air filters for the airpump. They found that some of the early aftermarket intakes drew hot air into the airpump and would kill the airpump prematurely. So, take that with a grain of salt. But, if something did happen to the airpump, you can buy a box of them for nothing nowadays, they're pretty valueless in the used parts market.
The cleanest way to give the airpump air is a hose going to a nipple on the intake hardpipe so it pulls air through the intake.

My intent is to get the airpipe inlet out of the way of the hot side IC pipe-which I want to run over the top of the airpump. Just like in the pic.
Yeah, apparently these small filters are so cheap and readily available there is really no reason to NOT filter the incoming air to the pump.

Good to know, thanks! the twin-turbo and emissions stuff is still a mystery to me since I've never dealt with it. Every time I see a stock RX7, "I'm like wow, that's a lot stuff for such a small engine bay". It's kind a like seeing under the hood of a 3000gt VR4 for the first time. THERE'S NO ROOM!

I picked up the air pump filter from rx7.com. But I didnt want it sucking in hot air with the filter just sitting right there and causing the air pump to fail.
So I ran a hose from the air pump into the long plastic air duct (into the opening that was originally meant for the stock airbox air feed) and put the filter inside right near the intercooler duct.
This way the air pump gets all the cool air it needs.
Edit. Never thought of running a hose into the intake like dale clark said but this summer the air pump goes bye bye.

Still do not know why people fight the stock airbox. If you want to improve flow, mess w/ the inlet side of the airbox. The stock airbox is still the best way to isolate ingested air from the heat of the engine bay and also takes care of the air pump. Oh, well, probably just start another flame war.
