Pettit intake... no good?
It seems like nobody around here likes the Pettit cold air intake. Ok, it does seem pricey but, I bought mine used for 75 bucks!!! That seemed like a good deal to me. I like the intake and it has turned my 7 from a quiet buzz to the whooshing sound of a turbo i like!! Does everybody think this is a crappy intake? If so, which is better andf why?

i have it...it works fantastic...but it looks like *** and has the worst craftsmanship of any part on my car.
i like rotary reliability and racings intake better...it has a lid and trim to match your car.

I think the intake is ok, i can stand to see those box intakes that have all the hoses going into them like the stock box. It just looks to congested for me.
But I also think for what it is he can knock the price prob in half and still make some money lol

function wise, the pettit intake is very good. It does have a heatshield and has a unique cold air design. It looks like crap however and is way overpriced for what it is composed of.

I agree, I have heard good and bad things about it.
One being that although it has a heat shield (a very ugly one) it still recieves a hotter intake temp than, the m2
But being a twin open (I just mean not in a box) filter design, it probably flows better than the M2 or other CIAs that are in a box like the M2.
I am sure you will hear both the same and the complete oppisite from people who own either.
I guess one thing you may want to consider is: what is more important to you now
1) the temp of the intake
2) or the volume of air that you can flow.
I think the pettit is expensive, but like you said you got it cheap, which is awosme...good find
hope that helps some...
If I am off base anywhere, I am sure someonw will pick up the slack

call rotary reliability and have them sell you the lid to their airbox....that would allow you to shield a bit of the hot air from the filters....should help some I would think...7148398018
otherwise...get one of the little headlight vents or a different hood...you can clean out some usless plastic in your front end to allow for better flow too.

Why would a lid make a significant difference? If the Pettit intake is installed properly, the heat shield has a foam pad along the top that mates up with the hood when closed, effectively creating your lid. I don't see why having a separate lid on top is going to help anything.

every little bit helps....fd racer even tapes up screw holes and cracks in the front end in order to keep all available air venting toward the intake and the radiator.
the part it helps with the most is covering up that ugly *** intake that the pettit is....I got tired of people asking me if i made it myself...especially considering it is a 400 dollar setup.
haha

it is ugly but i think it performs it's duty well, regardless of how it looks...it's all a matter of what you are looking for, some bling bling or something that will perform.....

It's not closed like a box. The temps are higher then boxed (hate to call them cold air) types. The Rotary & Reliability version (if I remember correctly) has two walls forming a box when the hood is closed and pettit's only has one wall leaving the box open. I beleive the sheet metal of Pettits is thinner as well. You can get a similar heat shield made by RE Amemiya from JT-Imports and then but the K&N filters and build your own Pettit kit.
Personaly, I like the metal mesh filters cause they don't wear out.

Well, its not completely closed, true, but adding a lid isn't going to help. If anything, I would say its the back wall...at rest, you may pick up some heat soak from the turbos. In motion, that shouldn't make much of a difference.
The metal mesh filters may not wear out, but I doubt they filter very well.

I've seen a number of people who insulate the heat shield and add an insulated back shield.

The rotary reliabilty version has a back wall, that's what I was trying to explain. The lid part is only for looks as it has RRR eched out.
I don't think any filter, filters better than my metal mesh ones and at the same time it flows more and is more durable, easier to maintain and does not clog over time. I do not beleive that Apexi sponsored comparison becuase there are the same bullship comparisons that say HKS filters are best and HKS is now selling metal mesh filters.

OK, I guess not all is negative about it. I have a complaint thought. My top filter gets real dirty real fast due to the insulation that is attached underneath the hood. I had to cut an ugly path out of it to stop it from happening! All in all, it was 75 bucks!!! Now, if I can only find a cat-back for 100!!
