Question Pettit Downpipe Flanges...

Does anyone know if the flanges on the Pettit SS downpipe are stainless steel or not? I received my downpipe the other day and was curious as to why there was silver paint over the flanges and the welds. I don't see how, or why, they would claim to have a stainless steel downpipe if it is not, in it's entirety, all stainless. If the flanges are not stainless, I would like to find out who, if any, offers a 100% stainless pipe, flanges, welding rods and all. Thanks in advance for the responses.

I'm pretty sure the flanges are not SS. Try sticking a magnet to them.

The M2 DP is 100% stainless.

There is a slight advantage to having mild steel flanges, however. The rest of your system is mild steel... this means that the flanges will expand and contract at the same rate as everything else, putting less stress on the bolts that hold the dp to the turbo and to the cat.

Mild steel also expands and contracts less than stainless.

Fact: even with a mild steel downpipe, there's a 95% chance that your DP will outlast your FD.

That silver stuff isnt paint, it rubs off on your hand. I cant remember what it is but its just a coating they put on there that burns off the first time you crank up the car. Thats how mine was anyway.

Later,

Have to agree. I have a mild steel Bonez downpipe, and yes it doesn't do the cool purple thing like stainless, but I can't see that sucker burning through. It's stout.
