I had a buddy who bought one once. First off, it simply seems to be a stock thermostat with a hole drilled in it. Second, he had over-cooling problems with it on the freeway on a cool night - the engine would fall below normal operating temperature.

IMHO it's not worth it.

It's a great track mod, the premise is to start circulating coolant at a lower temperature so you can dissapate the heat sooner and prevent the buildup of heat. As for it being a stock thermostat with a hole drilled in it, this isn't true Dale. Don't take offense, it is a different rated t-stat, actually it opens usually around 170degrees F.

Only slows the warm up time for the motor. No benefit that I could tell after installing it.

It depends on the climate of where you live. It would work okay in San Antonio. But if you are from North Dakota it would not install it.

Was the Intall easy?

I think my sensor messed up. Examples would be that it cause the coolant light on when it does not need coolant and cause me resivoir to over flow at other times.

would this fix that problem?

The symptoms you describe sound like air in the system.

But then why would the resivoir overflow?

I read that if you see soda like bubbles in the filler neck or is your exhaust air is damp that these are signs of water leaking in the engine. Plus the oil does not have water in it.

oh by air in your system do you mean the cooling system or the engine.

If cooling then what would be the fix, a simple flushing?

sorry to go a little bit off topic, but u cant post in the archives, but my question is related to the miata thermoswitch and the FC thermoswitch that everyone has had good results with. My question is...is there any point to doing the thermoswitch mod if you have already done the fan mod. Assuming im the only one to drive it, and I KNOW how to work everything to turn the fans on whenever i want, is there a point to buy the switch?

When you have air in the system it allows for localized boiling and higher pressure which the pressure cap will release over the pressure of your cap and overflow into the resivoir. If air is in the AST then it will push the air out, if the air is trapped in the coolant system and coolant is in the AST it will push fluid into the resivoir. If you have all the air out of your coolant system and you have a coolant seal leak then depending on where the seal is leaking (if in the combustion area) then this tends to pressurize the coolant system (champane bubbles) and expell coolant into the resivoir untill the engine warms up and generally seals the leak, but when it cools draws air back in at the seal leak and you again get air in the system. You probably need to do a really good burping of the cooling system and then see if your system is purging and recovering coolant from the resivoir like it's supposed to. Replacing the caps usually fixes this problem if it's not drawing back from the resivoir, or checking the return hose from the AST to the resivoir for some type of hole or crack in the hose.
