Overboost problems at transition after fixing low boost during 4500+ rpm

Ok, it's been a while because I've been busy at the shop. But my smog was due, so I had to get a factory cat, because the aftermarket high flow catalyst melted in pieces. I bought a used cat and slapped it on. The cat happened to fix my boost problem. It's pretty quick now. I was getting a 10-6-6 boost pattern before, but now I get a 10-14-10. I get a boost spike right at the 4500rpm transition. Hopefully I didn't hurt the motor too much since I have j'&s knock control module. I checked my connections to the wastegate and precontrol actuators and they haven't popped off. So I'm not sure what it is. Hopefully it's not my mods. There was an arguement last post so it was confusing me. This is my first fd and I got it like this so I wouldn't know. Any help would be great.

My mods are:

3" downpipe
factory Mazda cat
racing beat catback
pfs intake+intercooler
j&s knock control.

The boost spike is not too surprising, considering your flow improvements. You need a boost controller to tame the spike. There are certainly other solutions (different size pills, etc.), but a boost controller is, IMO, the best solution.

SOme people said I was fine with the mods and some people said I was not. Confusing, but my plan is to take the pills out and just turn up the boost with a hks evc if I can't do anything else.

Gamer, I agree with Dave's observation about your mods and spikes. Changing pills might work or might not take it far enough, but for a few dollars if you have the time to screw around switching out progressively larger pills, it is fun to experiment.

Yea, I might resize the wastegate pill. I hear the precontrol is not good to mess with. Well, when I have time in my busy schedule, I'll do that. I'm just considering after i bring the boost down, should I use power fc or hks evc to turn up the boost.

I've done both pills and controllers. The pills only help a little. The controllers work very well. I would not waste time, install a boost controller. Manual ball-spring controllers will cost under $100 for two and give you complete control.

With a stock cat and boost controllers set up correctly you will have a hard time getting in trouble.

I'll probably just save for an apexi power fc and hks evc after I get smog done with. Thanks for the help.
