I did the same thing soon after I bought my car. Thanks god I did on fully realease the clutch pedal, as the revs went off the tach. The check engine line came on briefly, but I never had a problem since.

I did a similar thing racing a Mercedes, but I had put it in Low and was racing this guy and the damned thing just wouldn't go past 80 miles per hour......and I am like, what the **** is wrong with my car....and then I do a Homer Simpson "DOH!" once I realize what a dumbass I was! With the stereo cranked I didn't hear the rev buzzer, but the ECU of the car was protecting it, just like it is supposed to.....smart car, dumb driver......

If you downshift to a lower gear, a revlimiter cant stop that.

Hope your motor is ok.

I didn't see the red light or hear the buzzer

I hope my motor is ok!! it seems ok right now...time will tell I guess

btw, the guy on the bike almost (!!) went down tying to stop behind me when I accidentally hit second!! his bike did the most wicked tank slapper I have ever seen in my life and there was smoke pouring off his front tire (not to be confused with the smoke pouring out of my tailpipe!!)

wow that was close
I can beat a 600

I tend to forget to shift a lot and bury the needed or bounce off the rev limiter a lot.

I seriously need a shift light.

I was at the drags when I went from 3rd to 2nd. So basiclly, I was in 2nd gear at over 90mph. I just passed the 1/4 mark when this happend. My trap speed was 88mph. There was just a munch of smoke pouring out and I got a good 200 people or so get off there asses cause they thought my engine blow. Car ran fine afterwards, I ran about another 4 runs after that

Overrevving a rotary shouldn't be as dangerous as overrevving a boinger... The inherent low number of moving parts in a rotary should be able to handle it if you weren't up in red for more than a couple of seconds. Boingers will suffer far more damage due to valve float and other catastrophic parts-meeting-other-parts-when-they-really-shouldn't type events. Lots of people claim that you can drive a RX-7 near red almost non-stop without damage.

FD's redline somewhere near or around 8k (my rev limiter seems to kick in around 8.5k and brings it down to 8k) As long as when you didn't surpass this by 25% or around 10k (you figure that the folks at Mazda designed in at last a 10% margin of error) for more than a second or two, I wouldn't worry too much. I guess the only question is whether or not you abused the sensitive apex seal or o-rings? Probably not, but be on the lookout for excessive smoke on startup...

I have to side with teddy on this, a 600 is not that fast as bikes go. I beat one down on the interstate it was great! When we slowed down I just rolled my window down and laughed at him. He shook his head and got off on the next exit. 750's and up are the drag bikes.

Well, the most i ever revved my engine was to 8k rpm's. And i thought that was too much. But i see alot of people shifting that high so i guess its no big deal. I just feel like something will pop that high in the rpm range. I never downshifted like that by accident though. I wouldnt want to find out the feeling either

Hahaha....that's funny! I just raced a bike the other day and I assume it was a 600 because he BEAT me but he ws barely pulling away!

The thing is, I over revved my engine and I think I fouled out my plugs. My car hesitates and jerks thru the RPM band even a light throttle......oh well, it was worth the $30 for new plugs!

1st gear protection??

I've noticed something about my FD that I've never observed in any other car... It seems to not let me shift into 1st when going above a certain speed... This is normal right? While it could prove disasterous to shift into 1st accidently, it's fairly uncommon to do so (at least I've never heard of it)... I find it to be kind of annoying, anybody know what the idea behind this was, or is my transmission just acting funky.

You can always get it into first if you heel-toe shift (assuming you will be grabbing less than redline in first, ie <40 mph etc). It is a blessing to be able to get into first when autocrossing and you want to blast out of a corner.

It seems to me that 2nd and 4th gear are very close to each other on the gear shift. About 3 times now (granted I am a newer FD) driver, I have missed the 3rd to 4th shift at about 90 and shifted to 2nd instead. All three times, I caught it right away, but the engine I am sure was well over 8500 RPMS. I locked up the rear wheels twice doing this with a quick burst of smoke!

Engine still runs great, but I am much more careful shifting now.

I over revved my car one time. I was trying to get something from behind me and I needed to put my foot on the floor to reach back there. I thought my foot was on the brake, but nope...it was on the gas. I revved it till I heard the siren....ouch...that one hurt.

The 1st gear synchro is not letting you shift into it. Heel-toe gets the gear rotating fast enough to match the input shaft close enough to the output shaft to that it will mate. synchros can only do so much. However you can force it in which is essentially like shoving it into gear without a synchro and your synchro would highly recommend not doing that.
