optimal rpms to shift from

OK, I don't know where a dyno is nearby and I probably wouldnt be able to access one. Does anyone have a general list of optimal rpms at which to shift from different gears? or did i just ask a stupid question.

if it helps my FD is currently stock, but i'm planning on adding a JIC Bullet Spartan 505 exhaust and downpipe soon.

It's best to shift at 7000-7500, anything past that and you are out of the power band. And no, you didn't ask a stupid question.

7000-7500 from every gear? i'm not sure why i thought it was different but i was reading something and i got confused

I'm surprised I've never seen this on any of the webpages or posts, but optimum shift points do vary depending on the gear ratios, and the rpm drop between gears. Thinking of a dyno chart, you want to maximize the area 'under the curve.' Meaning, you rev past the power max (where the curve is heading down to the right), then shift at the point where the rpm drop would put you at the same power level on the curve heading up on the left. The optimum shift point varies because the rpm drop is different depending on the gear ratios. If the variation is slight, can you really hit the exact shift rpm from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd? Doubtful. Somebody else do the math. OK 4th, too, but that's of little relevance to most of us.

Well, in first gear at WOT, it's almost impossible to shift much before redline anyway. I tend to shift from 2nd at about 7500 or a little more. But if you shift in the 7000-7500 rpm range in 3rd and 4th (hehe), I think you will notice quicker acceleration.

Yes, first and second just aren't controlable in a good running FD. It also depends on your mods as to where your peak power hits, most FD's drop off after 7500.

I was told that the shift points for turbo cars are when the boost starts to drop, which would be around 6500 rpms, which is when it drops from 10 psi to 8 psi in stock trim, but not really sure.

shift as high as you can, you can easily prove this on the 1/4 mile track . unless you get diffrent gears or modify your car hevily only then you should start calculating where you want to shift. just like jrfiero mentioned

Some people have done better in the 1/4 by shifting at about 6500-7000 RPM into 4th instead of running the RPMS up higher. Experiment at the track and see what works best for your car.

It's true about some people shifting into 4th early. The idea is that you get a better head of steam in 4th to the the end of the quarter mile. I haven't tried it yet, but I know people that do it. They drive diffirent cars though. I don't know if that will work with the twin setup though.
