Once again it's time for "how much would you pay?"

Well I finally found a nice looking one in my area

1993 Mazda RX-7
53,000 original
Montego Blue
Tan interior
Manual Transmission
Touring Package
Bose Sound system
Leather interior
Sunroof
Wired for hands free telephone
New Bridgestone tiresone owner
All original equipment (except for upgraded A/C)
Never wrecked
Always in covered lot or garagePristine shape$17,000obo

So 53000 with no downpipe ever. Is that a concern?

that's a pretty decent price only if the car hasn't been repainted and assuming the body is in perfect condition and the car has no mechanical problems (oil leaks, electrical, etc..) my advise is that if you find the shape of the body acceptable take it to a mechanic and have a mechanical checkup on it to see if there aren't any major problems. Otherwise it sounds like a pretty good deal. Don't worry about the downpipe thing, it's all good.

Sounds like a good car. I'm not a fan of Montego Blue, but these cars in decent condition are getting rare so I guess you can't be too picky if you really want one...

Well, it's also about location and that price is really good for that FD.

Make sure do to a compression test before you purchase the RX-7 or any type of car. The compression test will really let you know if the engine is still in great condition.

you're in the houston area ... in austin, there's 2 in the austin american statesman classfieds. a '94 and a '95 (whoa!). hell, i'm thinking about coughing up cash for the '95 being that they're pretty rare.

$17K seems a bit high. i bought my '93 R1 for $12K, but with 77K miles and a rebuilt motor (@70K miles). had to replace the radiator and went ahead with the silicone hoses, but didn't do the downpipe (auto-x restrictions). think about it this way, even if you put the downpipe on it right away, you'll still probably have to rebuild the engine in 30-40K miles or so (unless you baby it). that's at least a $4K investment ... so do the math, $21K over say 2 years. is it worth it to you? my vote is there are better deals out there.

more details?

That's my worry
The car will be run pretty hard I'm sure but it is for my weekend car, so I guess 30k would last me until I need to pull and have it ported anyways. I have plans to modify the car all the way to a single, and honestly would rather find an already lightly modded one. I'm having trouble searching. I only want black, silver, or MB. All the good ones are sold (no surprise).
Maybe I'll check it out and see what the car is all about

In my opinion motor life is a piece of the puzzle but not really the biggest piece.

It is easy to rebuild a motor (well have it done). It is hard to restore a body to like new condition. Even harder to restore all the trim and interior, little parts that get weathered and worn. Trim around the windows, interior stuff, etc.

My 93 R1 has been garaged since new, everything is practically perfect on it. I've had 9 FDs and you can tell the difference on the ones that haven't been garaged. The top of the taillights get sunbleached, same goes for those little black panels right behind the taillights (you can see them through the gap between hatch and taillights), interior parts, leather steering wheel, carpets, seats, plastic bins. All of these things start to show wear. Mileage isn't as critical as where the car lived (salt on the roads, coastal areas have it in the air), how it's been stored and maintained.

My 56K mile 93 R1 looks about as good as new inside and has only some rock chips on the hood on the outside. Buying a more weathered car and trying to "restore" it to the condition of my car would cost big $$.

Then again if your going to store the car outside and daily drive it save some $$ and buy one that is a little cheaper.

jeff and bitch are right, it is easy to rebuild the engine if it needs it (mine had 74k and now has 94k same motor...) but i ve seen maybe 1 or 2 fd's that have been repainted where you cant tell from 10 feet away.

the '94 has a new engine and new turbos, hoses and tranny (i think). the ad reads "$21K invested, come see it, make an offer." i may actually know this car, if it's the one i'm thinking of. if it is, the car is in decent shape.

the '95 has 52K miles on it. PEP package and the dude is selling it for $16K. sounds a little fishy .... no other details in the ad.

neither ad listed the color ... but if the '94 is the one that i'm thinking it is; then it's white.

and ... for your price range, go to www.lamotorcars.com; they're in the dallas/ft.worth area.
THEY GOT 8 OF 'EM!!! all ranging from stock to modded.

and the dude offers a 3 year warranty on them ... ha!

ehh.. you might be able to get it for cheaper considering the interior/exterior color.

The price is far from decent. It's kinda expensive.
