Okay, WTF? Ghost in the machine? Brake lights just turned themselves on

I was coming in for the evening after working outside - mowed, waxed the Maxima, did some other miscellaneous stuff outside the garage. And the brake lights on the FD were NEVER on, until I just walked by it, shut the garage door and bam! They come on.
And won't shut off.
WTF is this? Some sort of 'Christine' thing? Is it jealous of the Maxima?
This is seriously freaky.

Yes, it's jealous! You must get an old priest, a young priest, and a chicken. Sacrifice the chicken in front of the car and make sure its blood touches the tires. Then have both priests perform an exorcism!

Seriously though, how long has the car sat? Where is it stored? Could rodents chew on wires causing a short or perhaps the wires are chafing along a sharp edge. What work was done to the car last - anything electrical or needed to disconnect wire harnesses? Did you disconnect the battery in the mean time? Have you noticed anything else unusual about the car? Maybe some ruffled feathers by the exhaust pipe or any missing animals (jk)?

Cheers,
George

Charlie,

Thanks for those links! I subbed it for reference. I would never have thought about those plastic bumpers. The first thing I do tomorrow morning is inspect mine for potential problems!

Cheers,
George

9 times out of 10 it's the little rubber bumper that touches the brake light switch. It's a common problem.

My bet is on the stopper for the brake switch. They get old with age and break, then the switch has nothing to push against so the lights stay on.

Rubber stopper is broken or the switch has gone bad. Look under the dash.

Hooray! And knowing is half the battle.

FWIW, both of my clutch and brake rubber jammies look in decent shape.

It still was just freaky to have it do it just sitting there, hadn't driven it for a few weeks, hadn't bumped the car, opened the doors...nothing.

I'll go pick up a furniture pad and stick it on and be back in business...though I wonder if the OEM part is still available?

(I like keeping things OEM)

Follow the 2nd link from Post #3, there is a Nissan part that works well.

You should replace both the clutch and the brake pedal rubber stoppers on the way (or at least have a replacement ready). When I did my brake stopper, the clutch stopper went out the next week. I can confirm that the Nissan part number fits in both brake and clutch (it is a very tight fit for the clutch, but it fits!)

Same thing happened to me. I glued a dime in as a replacement. Been over a year and it's still working.

Update: Been 2.5 year. The dime is still holding. Cheapest fix ever.
