Okay, how bad is it?

My eyes hurt. My head hurts. I've read until I want to puke.

Simply put, even though I consider myself a rotary guy - I'm getting a bit nervous about looking for an FD. My FB experience was wonderful and when I find a suitable replacement for the one I sold like the boneheaded 18 year old I was, I will have another one. To keep. But I had always dreamed of the FD, and still love the cars. But is it only because I haven't owned one? I'm the kind of guy who can put up with annoyances to have something that's different, that I really want. Like the desmo valvetrain in Ducati Superbikes. Nice idea, very different from the norm, but practically - a piece of ****. Compare my current racebike, a 2002 Honda RC51 to a Ducati 996. Just using them as street bikes, a Duc will HAVE to have valve adjustments every 6000 miles, minimum, along with belt replacements at ridiculous intervals. My Honda doesn't have belts (gear-driven cams) and may not EVER need a valve adjustment. And costs $8k-$10k less. And has the same (or better if you compare same year bikes) performance.

But I still want one. The engine is different, the way it works is different, the way it looks is different. Am I looking at the same thing with the FD? It almost seems worse from what I've read. Nothing is for sale locally, and it would be hard to convince myself to buy something from out of state that I didn't have a chance to thoroughly check out before purchasing.

I'm not a drag strip guy, and I don't need a 400hp car. I take care of machinery. Car, bike, powerwheels truck for my kids - doesn't matter, I take care of it. Any reason a relatively stock FD (save maybe exhaust and induction) can't be a reliable driver with some of the common reliability mods?

Someone: ease my troubled soul! :-D

IMHO, the FD could be a very reliable car given the proper modifications and maintenance! However, you still have to factor that the car is starting to age and may need some new parts. For example: turbos, vacuum hoses, engine, solenoids, bushings, alternator, starter, transmission, catalitic converter, AST, ect. ect. ect. However, this should not be surprising since you've once owned a FB.
