ok ive almost had enough of this garbage
ok ive almost had enough of this garbage
This is my rant, im sick of the factory sequential turbo setup and all the crap under the hood associated with it. maybe it does improve your driveability but in my opinion mazda dropped the ball big time designing this god damn thing for ease of use. it would have been fine to have it so complicated if only there own dealers would service them with any amount of competence but instead your life up the proverbial sh*t creek dealing with and fixing it yourself. yes i can appreciate the tremendous amount of info by the rx7 community but what other car company with maybe the exception of LADA makes a car complete with a "well see you later" attitude and does not back them up? most mazda dealerships dont even own the specialized equipment required to properly diagnose a stock fd. let alone the mechanical ability to adequately repair them.
ive had a problem with my car and its not a motor issue at all so meaning its either electrical or vacuum related (SURPRISE!) but in typical mazda fashion they neither stand behind their product with knowledgeable staff nor make it any frikken easier for you do your self. To some owners who have learned these cars inside and out i salute you but for someone who just wants something to work as it should what a goddamn **** off. the Vacuum system is a horrendous example of complicating a rather simple idea. during the design of the FD did nobody raise their hand offer as an idea what many FD owners already know, which is wouldnt it have been both cheaper and much less complicated to just have a single turbo? or how about a twin turbo thats non-sequential? why was this sequential setup ever approved as a final setup? for all of the simplicity that a rotary motor offers the sequential setup negates it all.
Mazda dropped the ball when designing the mechanical aspect of these cars completely by neither standing behind it or at least making it easier for the owner knowing full well they would be the ones in charge of their own repairs. absurd. this of course has resulted in a specialty market of specialized mechanics each filling the void that mazda technicians created. specialized shops that are few and far between making small fortunes on FD owners frustration. lucky you if your within towing distance of one of these self made gurus hope you have time to start reading if you arent.
unknowingly every owner of an FD bought a project car from day one. a car that has either earned or not gotten a reputation for being notoriously unreliable, amazingly complicated and has support system that equals that of a kick in the ***. all this from day one. fast forward 8 years and mazda comes out with the rx8 a few re-designs and surprise no- goddamn turbo. it must have really left a sour taste in mazdas mouth after the fd. or the hate mail from dealers was just too much to handle.
So over the winter i now plan on fixing something mazda should have never attempted from day one and that is taking out the sequential system and then perhaps next year another proven successful idea being a single turbo.
My whole point of anger here is that as an owner of any car why should i be expected to be able to both know how to and the ability to fix it myself. no other car company on earth leaves a customer knowing that they have to be mechanically inclined in order to have a car that runs? NO! why? dealer support.
Either stand behind the car you make or dont make in the first place. the idea that when the fd was being designed they could have used any engine in the mazda lineup and they used the rotary which is good and simple and then started f*cking around with it and adding more sh*t making it both a display of lunatic engineering and a disgusting example of poor post sale service resulting in both a complicated and unreliable car.
That my two bits
DISCLAIMER:
Let me know what you think but please dont turn this into a flame war. i own the car because i love the style and the rotary motor, but again IMO the FD is an example of a project being over-engineered nearly to death.

...at this point, haven't we all learned (and shared our knowledge) that when you own an FD the number one rule is:
DON'T TAKE IT TO A MAZDA DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE! (or any dealership for that matter)
keep in mind mazda only sold the FD in the states for 3 years. that tells you something. there's probably a reason for this, my guess is that most americans tend to abuse everything that they own: ignore the required maintenance, "drive it like they stole it", and never take the time to learn about the mechanics of what they're operating. this far along in the game, if you're dumb enough to buy an FD without doing the reserach then it's your own goddamn fault.
despite common belief, there are some FD's out there that have been around the block a few times, seen 80k or 100k miles and have never blown a motor or had turbo problems. why are these scarce? probably because most FD's have had a few owners who fit the description in my previous paragraph.
a used FD isn't an out-of-box, reliable, daily driver. stop comparing it to a toyota corolla (figuratively speaking). the FD was designed to be a true sports car; hence, no cup holders. if you ever assumed it was going to be as reliable as your typical n/a 4 or 6 cyl, then you were wrong. let's remember that this is a 15+ year old car - and who knows how long it was in design/development. we're talking almost-20-year-old technology. how were they supposed to know that in 10-15 years the AST's would crack or the rubber vac hoses would become brittle? mazda designed an amazing car in my opinion, and i really think it's wrong to insult the designers/engineers who developed the FD. just because a car has problems when it's 10-15 years old, has seen thousands of miles, numerous owners, etc., it doesn't mean there is any reason to go ape **** about the design team.
sorry, but that's just my opinion on the topic. and believe me, i've gone though it all with my FD's: motor rebuilds, turbo rebuilds, little things breaking here and there, sequential & non-sequential setups, etc. but there is NOT ONE DAY that i wake up and say to myself, "GOD DAMNIT I WISH I NEVER BOUGHT AN RX-7". i'm very happy that i decided to buy my first FD several years ago - back then i didn't know anything about rotary engines other than the basics of how they work, and now i could probably build one from the ground up without any instructions.
cheer up, enjoy your car, and build it how YOU like it.

1. When you want it done RIGHT, just do it yourself.
2. Just because the dealer represents Mazda, doesnt mean they know what they are doing. How many FD's do you think mazda was expecting to see in Calgary for maintaince?? At any rate the rotary engine is the ugly child prodigy of the automotive world...
3. Complaining will never solve anything.
4. There are countess threads on reliablity, spend the money and TIME!!...
5. The FD is a very well built car, it will be as reliable as you make it.
6. FD's are NOT hondas, you do have to take car of it.
7. Make yourself a daily/weekly/monthly/yearly maintaince schedule
8. Abuse the car and it will abuse you.
9. Do things right the first time!
10. Frankly people couldnt care less about ranting, just get it done and fix it. Dont know how to fix it? Well learn...
See the pattern?
My FD runs perfectly... absolutly no problems, however i am putting it up on jackstands for a month and doing PREVENTATIVE maintainance. That way the car will run according my MY terms.
I inicially wasnt going to write anything, but its because of stuff like this that rotary looks bad... Go use ANYTHING out there without maintaining it, see what happens
=Ben

now i agree with everyone that people do not maintain their cars as well as should. in 95% of cases anyway regardless of make. im not complaining about the car because i do love it and i love to work on it but honestly even as a sports car there is maintenence as anyone would think and then there is having to be pretty near to a mechanic just to be able to drive it. im not arguing with anyone and as i said in my post "whether or not its earned its reputation, its got it." or as i put it "a car that has either earned or not gotten a reputation for being notoriously unreliable" mainly its the dealer reputation that im arguing against. the age is a big thing and i understand that especially at 13 years old some things are just going to have to be replaced. hoses, wires etc the list goes on and on. this is normal we can all agree what isnt normal is how the manufacturer does not support through ongoing training of its technicians in its rotary cars.
im not bashing the designers or engineers of this car one bit i just sometimes wish that they would have had more foresight into the future of the car for the future owners.
Ive owned several rx7s before this one and i still love them but its sad when you keep reading on the forums the horror stories associated with dealerships and non-specialized shops. it is the little bast*rd child of the automotive community in that its different. i can understand different but i cant understand for the life of me why mazda doesnt comprehend that the typical consumer regardless of if its a sports car needs something simple if the dealership cant service it. Yes ive rolled my sleeves up several times but ultimately shouldnt service whether your doing the job yourself or not start not with an online community but the manufacturer?
All this said ive owned several sports cars and some nice ones too but when you have an easier time getting a ferrari serviced in a town that doesnt have a ferrari dealership than you do your rx-7 when there is a mazda dealership isnt that a problem? what will the future hold for rx-8 owners? i have no idea but based on the past they better start collecting tools!
And ultimately i guess thats why i personally dont know of many girls that own these cars (please dont warp this to make it sound sexist) but i would recken its the same owners ratio of guys to girls that you would find in a mechanics apprenticeship. i hope that sounds right.
Im sick of dealerships having a bad rap. but they deserve it. they shouldnt afterall they share the same name but this is unfortunate. the scenario that sickens me the most is and what i have the biggest problem with is what happens when you want your car to work and something happens but you dont either have the time to do it yourself, the tools to do it yourself, the knowledge to do it yourself, the space to do it yourself, or a job that requires travel and you can only spend maybe 3 hours every two weeks on it. this is not to say that those are any of my scenarios however what if it were then i have a car that is essentially nothing more than a shiny trophy you cant show off.
how sad that mazda has let things in many cases do just that. i know of far too many stories both on here and personal accounts where the owner just scraps it because any one or more of those above scenarios have applied to them.
Thats all my rant is about above. and i fear i speak for far too many people on the same thing. its good that everyone on here is for the most part pretty mechanically inclined and loves working on their car including me, but why should you have to solely because you the manufacturers service network is clueless or you cant take it somewhere else?

And apex i think that your post is bang on right (even though some things shouldnt be right, i dont know if you know what i mean and i dont mean to bash you in anyway i just fear it might sound like i am but im not, its kinda like "the way things are but not the way they should be?!") but anyway i think that those should be the TEN COMMANDMENTS of owning an RX-7
What do you expect from a twelve year old sportscar? Please let me remind you that there were less than 15,000 3rd Gen's sold in the U.S. during the entire production run (sorry I don't have figures for Canada, but I bet there are less than 5,000). Most mechanics have never even seen one.
The RX-7 wasn't the only complicated turbo system in the 90's. I doubt the Stealth/ 3000GT, 300ZX , or Supra owners have much luck with dealer mechanics either.
Well, let me tell you something. A bone-stock 1994 base model is a damned good car, even a decade after its release. The OEM sequential turbo system provides a nice smooth powerband. My EMS allows me to run the turbos non-sequentially, and there is a noticeable lack of power below 4000 RPMs.
The next time you wish your RX-7 was more reliable, go drive a 1994 Corvette, Mustang, 300ZX, MR2, Dodge Stealth, or even a Supra. If you prefer any of those, you shouldn't have bought the RX-7 to begin with.

MODS PLEASE CLOSE THREAD
obviously some people arent reading anything they just like to troll the forums looking to flame and bash other owners who also work on their cars. and since they cant see anything but their own hard headedness my point is lost. anyone that sugguest i perhaps bought the wrong car by questioning the ability of a manufacturer to train their representatives to be able to maintain it or repair it reliably is a F*CKING MORON!!! no one on this board or any other bought their car to SIT IN THERE GARAGE AND COLLECT DUST. and if you think im incapable of or unwilling to work on my cars you again are A F*CKING MORON.
PLEASE READ THE THREAD BEFORE REPLYING WITH YOUR STUPID FLAMING
I DONT KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE TO REPEAT IM NOT KNOCKING THE CAR IN ANY WAY IM ONLY CRITISIZING THE DEALERSHIPS WHO HAVE ONLY FURTHERED THE ISSUES OF IT BEING UNRELIABLE
READ DAMMIT READ im sick of people who cant DAMN WELL READ before they spout SH*T all the time

Dude.....
STOP! Take a deep breath. Now...
What are the issues you are having with your vehicle? Symptoms, pics, video etc. would be helpful. Now, you ranting and raving with no rhyme and/or reason will get you nothing. This community has generally accepted that just like any other car, it has it's downfalls. The complicated vaccum system is one of them. Again, as stated previously before; it's over a ******* decade old. What do you want from it? The FD is the beautiful bitch of the 7 community. It's high maintainence and it wants it now! Seriously...
Just post some more info and less crying and I'm sure some of the senior rotar heads can help.

Haha no worries
no sorry im not crying at all the issue is fixed and the car runs fine but again my whole thread is about the customer dealership relationship but i cant seem to point out to anyone that if you my car is in factory condition same as it rolled off the assembly line near mint. however my rant all began when i asked a mazda dealer if i could book it in to have them take a look at something which was a slight surging like the car didnt want to decelerate when you took your foot off the gas i didnt have time to do it and their response was " sorry we dont like to deal with those cars anymore "
Terrific i thought this whole time ive been doing it myself anyway but its kind of sick that at that moment it seemed to be official they dont deal with their own cars.
Ya its a bit of a rant but ultimately I believe that if you sell something know how to service it. regardless of whether the customer can do it themselves.
But yes i get worked up on threads where i take the time to read and understand where people are coming from only for a bunch of punks that come on here quite regular and take one sentence or phrase out of an entire thread and use first off out of context and secondly use it only to argue with whoever wrote it.
its not just this thread. but im pissed off over how often someone has too much to say when they havent spent half as much time reading or listening.
im calm now. but it really seems like theres far too many 17year olds trolling the forums looking for fights.
any way the problem i had seemed to be cleared up as soon as i took off the dash pot looked at it funny and put it back on. no biggie, but seems like an overly complicating car if officially mazda wont touch it... and for the love of god do not take that out of context.

Don't take it to Mazda, unless you know they have good rotary mechanics. That was just the service guy talking I'm sure. You should have asked for the GM and if that didn't work, ask him to call the owner to explain it to you while you're there. I'm not familiar with Calgary re: rotary shops, but there are a lot of 'Flamers' on here (
sorry I needed to work that in there-hockey, Flames, nevermind). I'm sure they can point you to somebody who is worth a damn, or even help you with issues.
I have to tell you, that since I've relocated to SoCal. Guys have been more than willing to help out. I have a guys offering up garage space, tools, their time etc. because the 7 community is really awesome like that. Just go into the regional forum and ask those guys. I hate to tell you, but your 'surging' problem has not gone away. It's hiding. Like the rest of the FD's issues. Either nip it in the bud or else....
Good luck with the FD... FLAMER! Okay, sorry.
(Edit: The NHL hockey team for Calgary is the Flames, right?????
)

and yes the flames are our team hahahaha im impressed!
The community where i now live i think theres a total of 4 FD owners one guy i guess is a rich old guy whos owned the car since new and its all factory the other is a RHD, myself and another guy who swapped in a turbo 3.8 GN motor.
Thats my new support group ha!
and for mazda and obvious reasons i wouldnt take it to them normally or as a first choice but im just more peeved that they can say that. it seems like everywhere in western canada service has just fallen off the map restaurants, everywhere! all cause house prices went up triple in two years and theres massive labor shortages everywhere so people have really gotten use to only expecting **** service everywhere you go.
oh and i added your quote as my sig

Well, I'm at least glad I could fit that joke in on a Canuck once before I died. I wasn't too sure, I didn't want to call you a Flamer for nothing.
RHD guy can help you. There is not too much different as far as the engine compartment. Maybe the rich guy will buy you a mechanic???
Learn to do things on your own, I was a n00b who didn't know **** about cars. FSM is my friend.

ultimately tho im looking for a second one thats cleaner than this one so i can go single turbo on one of them. and leave the other a perfect stocker
and it seems that the wiring harness might just be on its way out... still repairable but its original and most parts of it are getting pretty brittle and and wiring into some clips is really showing wear. i think that will be done very soon at least pull it all out a go through it all making repairs as needed.
If you're confident the vacuum hoses are routed correctly, strongly consider replacing the engine wiring harness. I fully believe it to be a maintenance item, grossly expensive though it may be.

ive replaced all the vacuum lines in the spring just this year and the ast is on my list eventually however i dont drive it much. but i am thinking just for my own personal ease of diagnosing just going no sequential. i can get a spare exhaust manifold very easily to modify so i wouldnt wreck anything permanently and could always change my mind.
